1.2 or 1.4 ratio transfer box

So the previous owner of my Land Rover claimed it had a 1.2 transfer box fitted. It never really felt like it to me but I thought maybe that's just because I had only driven my fathers ex mod 110 with a 1.6 for the past year beforehand. I got a second opinion from a Discovery 1 owner and they agreed the gears don't feel as tall as they theoretically should on a 1.2. Now I've taken a look at the box and it has a blue 1.211 marking etched onto it but the serial number has a 43D prefix which would indicate its a 1.4 box. Anyone got any suggestions to clear this up once and for all? PS tyres are 235/85/16

2008 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 CSW Zermatt Silver

The blue "1.211 RATIO" sticker on the box is typical of Ashcroft recon units. The 43D engraving is clearly not the original engraving on enclosure, and has been superposed. This is also typical from Ashcroft recon units where they alter the first digits on the recon units they send you to match what was original on your car.

At least the above is my experienced when I bought the current transfer box from them on my Puma, I was asked to supply the serial number of the original box (81DXXXXXXX which was the factory fitted 1.211 ratio), and guess what .. a recon unit showed up with 81D engraved on top of 23D. So I am now running with a transfer box enclosure from a D1 or RRC. However what's inside is different (ATB + 1.1 ratio)

Thanks matt, yes it does make sense. If it has been successfully converted to 1.2 ratio what else could be causing it to feel like a 1.4 still? I cruise at 60 and the engine is getting loud at that point, can push it to 70 but it really is running hard at that point and wouldn't try pushing it further. 1999 Land Rover Defender 110 td5 station wagon

A rev counter will tell you your rpm at a given speed. Probably the easiest way to see.

Ordered a ten quid tacho off ebay, should be here in the next few days although I'm off on a work trip soon so probably wont be able to update this for a while but will post the rpm at 60 on here as soon as. I have the 1.2 ashcroft ratios so I'll look at the RPM at the weekend. Will be interesting to compare my results with others too.. TD5 hardtop to Puma inspired Poptop - my build thread

2015 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 XS CSW Montalcino Red

On 235s, with a 1.4 box 60mph is around 2500 rpm

1.2 box it's a smidge over 2000 rpm.

Silly me I just realised I have an obd reader that can display engine speed! So I went for a quick run down the motorway and at 60mph gps speed the engine is sitting at 2130-2170rpm. At 60mpg speedo speed we are sitting at about 2070-2120rpm. This sounds pretty close to what you were saying Martin so I think this confirms it
