TDI 200 Year 1991 Oil Cooler Pipe
Hello everyone,

I need some help or opinions again.

When I changed my engine oil on June 2023, my intention was to also replace the oil filter housing gasket. However, I wasn't able to get it done at the time. Instead, I opened the waxstat adaptor and changed the O-ring, among other things.

After screwing back the oil cooler pipe (as shown in the picture), I noticed leaks starting to appear. Fortunately, I recently noticed the leaks becoming very obvious when the engine is running, and I estimate that about 800ml to 1L of engine oil has been lost.

As a response, I unscrewed the oil cooler pipe and applied white tape. This has improved the situation compared to before, but there is still a very minor leak, and I'm uncertain about how long this temporary fix will hold.

Do any of you have an idea about this? Should I consider changing to a new oil cooler pipe? Or is it possible to unscrew it and re-fit it properly again?

I think overtighten that time and caused the leaks Crying or Very sad

Thank you so much for your assistance!

I think I have a spare set of oil cooler pipes, will have to check how the seal is in the engine side. I am very sure its a taper seal in the radiator side. But memory is a bit hazy on how the sealing is on the engine side. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Oh I see, Do you still intend to use it? It also has a taper seal on the engine side, but I believe it doesn't come with an O-ring (as earlier models don't have O-ring, correct?).

Correct. Very late 200 tdi had o rings but most are taper.

Have you got the pipe support clip fitted? I would try some loctite thread sealer like 561 or 545 instead of ptfe tape, check locally though as what suits.

No, so must have the pipe support clip? I think have to change a new pipe for better solution.

and thanks for your recommendation - loctite thread sealer, able to buy it here.

thank you.

Dear all,

Update:

I noticed there is a leak even after I opened it and refitted it using PTFE tape. It appears that I really need to replace the oil cooler pipe for a better solution.

One more notice:

Does anyone know what this thing is (circled in red)? I also noticed some leaks at the bottom (circled in blue). Is there any gasket there? Please refer to the attached picture.

thank you.

That is the brake vacuum pump. Yes, there is normally a gasket underneath it. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Alright, if I open it, will any fluids like brake fluid come out? Because I've noticed that the leak underneath is engine oil.

Thank you Dinnu Very Happy

No, no brake fluid. Just undo the 3 hex head bolts, and lift up. If now remember correctly there may be 2 gaskets, as the bracket for the throttle linkage is sandwiched between the vacuum pump and the engine block. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Yes and yes. I like to use fibre type of gasket when I need a diy approach. For this application, thickness is not so critical, but do not go too thick as would ‘warp’ the vacuum pump.
For extra measure, I do sometimes smear a small amount of RTV on both sides of the gasket. It also helps to locate the gasket, especially in this case as is a bit fiddly to align the bottom gasket, the throttle bracket, the top gasket and finally the vacuum pump, which shaft need to be in the correct position for the drive to engage all at the same time. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
