United Kingdom 1988 Defender 90 V8 Petrol CSW Rimini Red
Won't start.....
Scenario:

Drove the car in and stopped - switched off and walked away - it was running completely normally

Came back to the car a few days later - won't start - turns over freely

The car is a factory built one - not a conversion, and all parts are standard

Symptoms:
There is only one spark (tested with a plug) at the start of turning the key and another spark when turning the key off
Otherwise the engine will not run

Tested/changed:
New Ignition module (tested and changed) - it's a two pin module fixed to the side of the distributor
Distributor - std fit electronic ignition - hall effect sensor checked
HT leads - resistance check
Ignition switch bypassed to coil
New coil
Earth checked (bypassed with HT lead)

Stumped a couple of experienced mechanics who have had a look

Next thing to change is the HT leads and try that - we have swapped them to see if the king lead has died, but no difference

So, what could be the 'fix' here? 90 V8 CSW - 1988

Wondering if your car is old enough to have an Alarm Spider in the dash board.

I had a Discovery 1 V8 1996 and they had known issues with it. It immobilizes the engine but it will still turn over.

There is available on a ebay as bypass wiring fix which is plug and play.

Good luck

Thanks all

Charlie - Yes

Don - no, it's too old to have anything like that

I'm purchasing a new Hall effect sensor for the dizzy and a new king lead - it's had an ignition amp and coil so far (as well as some wiring and checks with spare parts) 90 V8 CSW - 1988

Sorry - no, still not running

Made the decision to find someone to do much more to it. I have another engine to go in and need some bulkhead work done at the same time.

I'd like somewhere local to me that can take it, fix it and bring it back in a better state.

Suggestions have been Safari Engineering in Eversley as the local places have either closed or don't do welding. 90 V8 CSW - 1988

Final update on this one.

It's being collected next week and I don't expect it back for a while. The bulkhead is going to be done as well as the engine build and a whole host of new bits to make it all work.
