It's a great story and one which I can remember doing the rounds as a schoolboy joke when I was at school in the 1960s. Sadly as far as I am aware there is not a grain of evidence to suggest it is true, and it seems unlikely given what we know about the man himself.

I did actually meet Douglas Bader once, in the mid-1960s, on a garage forecourt in Aylesham, Norfolk (apparently at that time he lived nearby). For well-known reasons he had an unusual gait, and I, with all the characteristic tact of a puny sprog, loudly asked why "that man walks in that funny way". With consummate good grace and manners the great man introduced himself and explained. A memorable moment.

At that time the same garage had a magnificent early-1920s Hispano-Suiza coupe-de-ville under a huge dustsheet in its workshop, apparently stored for a local wealthy person, which the proprietor was happy to show me. A truly awesome car, and I wonder what became of it.
