Good luck.

Someone must have made that electrical modification for a purpose - so you need to get hold of a wiring diagram to establish ‘what’ they have been trying to by-pass - which may in turn establish ‘why.’

Ultimately you want to go back to standard, and if that means replacing wiring, relays/bases and other components then that’s what I’d do.

If you haven’t got one already, get yourself a multimeter and a continuity tester (you can make the latter).

Hope you sort it Thumbs Up

I do have a multimeter, now I need to find the original wire/fuse plan. Making my Defender great again. (Or trying to at least xD)

Could it have something to do with the recall to modify the AS10 power feed to stop theft? It originally shared the feed with the hazard flashers and shorting them meant that the AS10 didn't sound hence allowing breaking in in silence.

It's not on those circuits, and certainly not the way the wiring is done for that modification.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

My suspicion is that it is a bodge to allow the window lifters to operate with the key in position 1, so it is no longer necessary to switch the ignition on to operate the windows. It is very crude but quite imaginative if so.

I would suggest removing the wire and seeing if normal operation is restored, and I certainly would not leave the modification in place, there are several obvious hazards associated with it.

Since the vehicle is LHD the relays are in slightly different positions to those on an RHD. The non-standard Bosch relay is the headlamp relay, and as Martin has observed there is evidence of overheating on the socket. The non-standard metal-canned relay is the heated rear window relay. The one with the extra wire is the window lifter relay, and the one to its right is the alarm sounder relay. The tall one in the row above is the windscreen wiper ECU, and to its right is the flasher unit (which LR confusingly describes as the Hazard Warning relay).

Since relays are generally very reliable (I have not yet had to replace any on my 2007, 275k mile Defender) it is hard to understand why there is so much carnage in this area. Perhaps someone attempted to steal the vehicle and in so doing caused damage.

Yeah I don't know either what happened. I'll try to put it all back to factory and see if something does not work anymore. That'll maybe help us see why it has been done. Making my Defender great again. (Or trying to at least xD)

I spent 3 hours today changing the injectors seals and rock cover gasket. I did it because there was a lot of oil on top of the rock cover and some air pressure when opening the oil cap. Works out that the injectors were quite clean (not much carbon/dried diesel). I will see in the future if the leaking is gonna come back, which is likely since there is still some air pressure unfortunately. Nothing dramatic, and no smoke or oil spitting out, wondering how much is acceptable.. Disappointing day, now my head is going in all direction with the worse case scenario being a blown piston ring or even a cracked piston Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Making my Defender great again. So, blowby is still really present when engine really warm unfortunately. I made a video of a sound that is also related to this same problem I am guessing. That noise came mainly once the engine is out, and from 2000rpm. As soon as the accelerator is released the noise is instantly gone. It made me think of injectors the first day I bought the car, hence why I did all seals new.. If anyone was there before me, I would not mind some guidance.. I will get the injectors checked as soon as I find a garage where I can store the car.
