INSA tyre suggestions
The 110 needs a full set. Budget point remould. Over the decades MT patterns have served me best for what I do. Maybe 3000 miles a year. Virtually no dual carriageway driving, trundling around the lanes at 40mph. Off road is a mix of fields, woods and green lanes. No bottomless bogs.
Locally Insa tyres seem to be the way to go. However my old fave, the Dakar doesn't seem to be an option any more. Options are either a Risko, which appears to be more or a , I dunno, town based G wagon tyre (yes I am being unfair and judgemental) or the Special Track which looks to provide a better solution to deep mud etc. However the ST worries me with regard to wear rates as less rubber will disappear sooner all other things being equal. Am I being over cautious . Maybe the ST will perish before it wears? The Risko, apart from looking weird is an unknown pattern and does have the disadvantage of needing another or the same pattern whereas a "normal" MT could be matched pretty well from another make. Your thoughts please.

The Risko is a copy of the later BFG MT pattern (KM2/KM3?) so is not really an unknown or untested pattern. The Special Tracks are totally overkill for your described usage. Have you ever used the ST pattern? They drone at speed, feel lumpy when rolling to a stop and sap power and speed. I have a set for playing and they work off-road brilliantly but I always swap back to my MTs once back home to improve the road experience.

The STs knock around 3-4mph off my top speed so presumably have at least the same effect on fuel economy (I don't monitor this).

Everything wears quicker than a BFG. I'm still running the set of 255/85s I bought in 2015 and they are still usable for greenlaning etc over 40,000 miles later. They might be expensive, but buy cheap buy twice etc....

By the way, the main reason I swap out the STs asap is to preserve the tread for max off-road performance, not bothered by the harshness and noise. The dulled performance is a pretty major factor though.

Cheers. Much as I thought.

Have you looked at new tyres from a mid range manufacturer, such as Falken, Maxxis or Kumho?
These days the price difference is negligible, either the same or maybe £10 - 15 per tyre more than remoulds.
Buying a set of those, you know they're new and all of the same construction, tyres age on the inside too.

Like most I’ve had all sorts of brands over the years, but the set which was the worst was Insa. The Dakar specifically. I was noisy, poorly made and cheap. Just a few miles after fitting I honestly couldn’t wait for them to wear out, which wasn’t long as the side walls of the near side two we’re ripped out on a country ( tarmac) lane.

Lots of unbranded mud tyres I’ve had have been just fine, although generally wearing faster, they’re about done after 15k.

Kumho are good as they have reinforced side walls and wear as well as anything else I’ve found. I’ve had several sets of Bfg tyres, they’re good quality and look good but are expensive and I’ve never got any more mileage out of them than anything else usually 25k.

I’m currently on a set a Toyo Open County MT which we’re around two thirds of the price of the Bfg MT, but are just as good for my use. 1983 110 automatic OM606

I had Insa Turbo Sahara tyres on my Series 2a for 8 years. They were very good on the road/off road and they still had plenty of life left in them when I sold it. BORG - Bucks & Oxon 4x4 Response Group
