You are probably thinking of the pressure differential valve, which some earlier vehicles did have. This would detect a difference in front/rear circuit pressures and close off the one with the leak as well as activating a warning light.

Not sure how reliable they were. It was effectively done away with by the later master cylinders which operate in the way that blackwolf describes with a warning light sensor on the reservoir cap instea

Very true, and the brake reservoir cap sensor is very sensitive, it’ll kick in just a very small amount below max level on the level indicator.
Then of course the brake warning light comes on with that right away. ____\We|Will|Win/___
