Burned contacts can cause that. You can buy replacements and change yourself. Of course can also be that the motor has packed up, but the contacts are a common fault. Typically however you get a few false starts before they completely let go

In my experience they get sticky first so a few goes of the key and it will eventually go, but I’m sure they can suddenly completely fail.

not too bad a job on Td5 if you have exactly the right length of 3/8 extension for the 15mm top bolt

X8R supply a solenoid kit. I fitted mine about 5 years ago, been faultless.

I had fair warning and replaced before I was stranded.
X8R supplied my solenoid kit, quality appears good and has worked fine for 12,000 miles. The starter motor itself was a reconditioned unit so there was some history prior to my ownership 15mm bolt with flange head on 10mm thread - which would typically have 17mm spanner size |

Rebuilt my solenoid a couple of times now, and the symptoms sound right. I've never had the plunger get stuck, it's usually just arced the contacts away to nothing.
Turning the plunger, and giving the contacts an emery cloth and a quick bend can get you out of a mess if you're desperate. Just not for long! |
