Hi all I have a strange whine in the driveline starting around 50mph. I believe it’s there in 4th and 5th but the revs drown it out in 4th. As soon as I come off the throttle it stops but does kind of fade in and out during deceleration. Has anyone experienced this?

Sounds similar to mine, been like that ever since I have owned it (8 odd years), I assumed it was transfer case whine which some say is fairly common, but I believe it can be difficult to pinpoint... 2004 Defender 90 Td5 CSW

Thanks for responses guys, I am planning to overhaul the TC soon and change to 1.2 gears while I’m there. I’m hoping that’s the culprit

Good luck, please would you be able to update thread on how you get on with new TC, it would be good to get my whine sorted too as it's always annoyed me!

4th gear baulk ring wears out quite fast. 5th gear also is known to give issues. Some say to not use this gear for towing, but I believe that depends on the driver. For example, if you're on the highway towing heavy and just entering the highway, it's worth over revving in 4th if the highway is on an incline for that moment and then wait until it declines to shift into 5th, this would reduce the amount of stress on the that gear and shaft.
Anyways I would check your oil, Gbox- ATF Dexon III TB + DIFF - 75w90 Diff states 80w90 but if I am towing heavy, I will use this visc. otherwise 75w90 will work fine. Proven by myself for 50,000 km and no wear to the diff. The correct oil used should dampen your vibration within the box and prevent whining. |

I had an annoying whine in my driveline which I narrowed down to either transfercase or diff. I had an transfer case lying around so I swapped that in and the wine is gone. Totally quiet (from a driveline noise perspective). I wrote 'whines' on the removed TC and put in back on the shelf to look at in future, of course have not done that. I could always use it as a core. I suspect it might be worn bearings.
Used Transfercases are cheap, you can give it a shot, was not that much work to change out. Or you get a rebuild one from one of the vendors out there. |

Thanks for the responses all, I’ve removed my tc and stripped it on the bench finding some lumps of a brass/copper coloured material which I suspect to be the diff. I’ve sent the case to Ashcroft to be sleeved and returned with
Rebuild kit AATB Large capacity sump While I’m this deep I think I might replace the rear support bearings in the R380. Shoutout to ashcroft, they’re very helpful ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge |
