Shim front half axle shaft (RFC578x)
Hi All,
I have been trouble shooting a rotational scraping noise that started to appear occasionally on my 2003 td5 DCPU.
The noise clearly follows the rotation of the tires (speed) and does not change between power and overrun and it comes and goes. The other day I noticed it came, but then went after I turned.. or maybe that was coincidence..
About a year ago I rebuild the front axle as my original axle tube was bend. I inspected all the parts during installation and all looked good. I don't do that many miles so I would be surprised if my front diff or drive shafts would be worn. The oil out of the diff is black but looks more like one-shot contamination than metal.
I was thinking of pulling it apart but while going through the parts manual I noticed these shims (item 19).

This made me think possible the half shaft is moving too much, I did not check this during installation. Easy to check too. Clearance spec 0.4-0.25mm. Both side have shims fitted. One side has a clearance of 0.8mm the other is 1.9mm (!). I had 2 shims left from the other axle and swapped some around to improve things, including having to double stack two on one end(!). Now I have 0.6 and 0.4mm
Will try out and see if this will resolve the issue, but I am interesting to hear if anyone has had any issues with excessive clearances and what sort of issues that causes. Also is double stacking shims normal or is there something else amiss. Aftermarket half shaft or drive plate?
