Temp sensor
I have a 2002 td5 defender,
I am hoping that its possible to install a regular temp sensor and gauge as i like knowing exactly whats going on temp wise, perhaps a sensor into a coolant pipe as the add on sensor for electronic fan upgrades used on series's were, i will be keeping the old gauge and sensor in situ as i am wary of the ecu, at the moment the guage goes straight up to half way and then after a minute or two drops back 1/4 and then down to zero where it started from,
Has anybody done this previously or could point me to any info that may help,
Thanks,

It's possible to drill and tap a hole into the same housing as the standard sensor. I have a Durite guage with it's sensor located here.

It does sound like you're getting strange readings on the standard gauge 1990 Defender 110 200TDI Camper - now converted to Td5 power

As you know the gauge is not really that accurate but I believe the sender is, and you can use a nanocom or similar to see these reading in degrees C whilst driving.

The gauge designed to appease our human mind. It stays dead center over a large (acceptable) temperature range and then goes full hot when too hot.

When I got my Td5 there was an earth issue somewhere and every time the AC compressor kicked in it would increase the temp gauge to where it would read almost in the red to then revert back to dead center with the compressor off. Although it was clear there was an electrical fault and a logical correlation it was still unnerving to see the temp gauge read high.

Nanocom will read you the real temperature and you can see it fluctuate. I believe there are gizmo's you can get that read the OBD2 code and display the figure

I have a GORE block, replaces the stock one and gives another hole for an additional sensor. However they are no longer made. I believe you can get some sandwich plates that give you a 1/8npt hole for an additional sensor.

Or its the old school method of cut the top hose and fit one in there with the help of a universal adapter.

You need to keep the original sensor to keep the ECU happy or it will constantly think its overheating.

You can also remap the engine ECU, so it will work like standatrd thermomerer, not like an "indicator for human". Bigger problem is, when you loose cooling fluid from engine, sensor is not submerged in coolant and cannot measure any valid value. So for me more important is some coolant level indicator, than accurate thermometer. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "BlufĂnek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile
