The 5.0 V8 is one of JLR’s longest running performance engines - it’s stood the test of time.
I personally prefer the 5.0 V8 over the Octa BMW turbo engine. The turbo engine is soulless in comparison and there are many more parts to the turbo engine. You should see 30mpg on a long run at 70-75mph and have that fantastic rumble. I am biased ![]() 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS. |

Sorry I don’t agree, the constant whining from the 5ltr supercharger is annoying and imho makes your ears bleed where as the 4.4 offers a true engine rumble/growl.
The 5ltr is also a very dated engine and has had its issues such as cam/tappet rattle but more so in the higher power versions - it is an issue on all variants but occurs sooner on the higher power versions. I am sure the BMW engine will have issues as well though! Gas, Grass Or Ass - Nobody Rides For Free "UNDERSTEER" ----is when you hit the fence with the front of the car. "OVERSTEER" ------is when you hit the fence with the rear of the car. "HORSEPOWER" ----is how fast you hit the fence. "TORQUE" -----------is how far you take the fence with you. |

I wouldn’t be worried about noise - it’s fairly tastefully tuned and the L663 is so damn quiet anyway. Like being on a train on the motorway.
If anything the 5.0 in the defender is a little muted unless you have the windows down in dynamic mode Economy is impressive on a cruise (I consistently get 23 mpg at 77 on the motorway even with the AT tyres) which was better than I got out of the PHEV. Around town it obviously struggles though, 10-15 mpg mostly. As for reliability it’s a tried and tested engine and JLR sorted most of the issues through its lifetime. Never feels like it’s trying too hard which I like, and there isn’t turbo/dpf/adblue/mild hybrid etc to cause any issues. As with any engine it will appreciate good oil, changes and a bit of a warm up. I partly went for the V8 because it’s a bit simpler and I was tired of rattly and overcomplicated diesels. Probably just a mental thing though - it’s still a Land Rover after all. I don’t think you’ll regret the V8 if you are interested Cheers, David Land Rovers of all shapes S3 onwards… Daily is a 110 V8. |

I completely agree with you. The 5.0 is almost like an old school muscle car simplicity compared to the turbo engine. That was my reasoning. Modern engines are way too complicated. 2017 L494 Range Rover Sport SVR
