A bit of surface rust?!
![]() Rust aside, the prop shaft is perfectly normal for the grease to make its way out or excess grease to flick around the area. Prop shafts on these need greasing. Steering ball joint is a cheap fix. A leaking steering box however… very expensive if you want to stay genuine. 2017 L494 Range Rover Sport SVR 2008 2.4 110 Utility Station Wagon XS. |

Thanks, very helpful. I’ve been trying to work out how much rust is acceptable to run with and apply some protection/waxoyl to and how much will end up being a lot of effort/money to sort, what are your thoughts on those pics?
Assuming that looks like a leaking steering box to you then? |

As has already been said..... Some surface rust
![]() Surface rust inevitably turns into a chassis replacement within a few/several years (note, do not fear the chassis replacement, two under my belt now and at the point of considering this a service consumable on any older landrover!). Your oil/grease leaks in the first two pics are entirely normal. Third pic has got me slightly unsettled.... That leak looks incredibly black, like engine oil? Not sure why that would be focused around the steering box? Also just to point out, that layer of grey/beige chalk all over the chassis and steering components show this vehicle has been off road in recent history then given a rudimentary hosing off to remove the mud. Oil leaks onto a dirty surface normally turn a wet brown colour. Your leaks are just far too black, so armed with that info, proceed with caution! |

Personally, it’s a buyers market right now. I’d leave that one and be looking at a different one. Or at least view a couple more and come back to that one, once you have a better idea of the average condition within your price range.
That one you have posted is the same age as my 110. And there’s quite a difference in underside condition. I’d agree with everything that’s been said. When buying any second hand vehicle it pays to go to see a few of the same model, then compare them and pick the right one for you. Although I’ve had several Land Rovers over the years if I wanted to buy another one I’d still go and see several variations of whichever model I was looking at. That being said if you see the right one first, you’ll know.
I’d agree that it’s a buyers market now, I’m trying to sell a camper and it’s taking ages, with lots of people making offers thousands below what I’m asking, which is already good value compared to others for sale. Perhaps they are all overpriced, therefore so is mine, I don’t know. Given a choice I’d try to buy from an enthusiast who’s looked after it, there are often ones for sale on here or you could put a wanted post up. Good luck with finding the right one! 1983 110 automatic OM606 |

For a 2008 thats not had any or much chassis protection its as to be expected. I would be more concerned with rear cross member conduto . Where is it located, inland, what's it been used for? A proper jet wash/steam clean would highlight areas of concern. It may well be reflected in the price anyway, the rust shown wouldn't put me off.
The prop and steering drop arm joint are no problem, steering box looks to be leaking or something above which is unlikely on that engine geometry. So box may need new seal or replacing. Something to factor in. It is 17 years old. Cheers James 110 2010 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |
