Looking to see if anyone has come up with something similar to this? or has a better idea for me to use...
I need to transport a object that's 1.6m x 30 x 25 and weight's about 15kg in the 90 Puma about 1000 miles round trip through Germany (inc possibly a trip around the world famous ring) Now it does just fit jammed diagonally across the back but it's less than ideal, limits storage for other things and it's quite a funny shaped thing that will move around and do damage to the interior / itself My plan is to create a rack in the rear that picks up on the M6 tie down points in the rear such as my wonderful drawing in paint shows lifting the object above the passenger seat and giving me the length that the 90 doesn't have in the rear Other option is to take the seat out since im rolling solo however will be meeting up with friends and the passenger seat may be useful later on... Has anyone done something similar to this before? ![]() Click image to enlarge The idea is to create a platform for it to sit ontop of and be strapped down to. ![]() Click image to enlarge I plan to make it out of 30 x 30 aluminum box, and the tie down attachments will be 5mm aluminum with the 30x30 welded to it. I don't really have any pickup points on the window side of the car, maybe i can clamp to the bulkhead removal bar? It's also a bit of a pain, as i'm away with work so i can't use the truck to measure off / visualise, i will have a week to build this contraption from getting back to the trip starting. |

My biggest concern is that the object being carried, may slip it's bonds, and become a projectile either forwards through the windscreen or backwards though the rear screen - either way bad. Is this object making a return journey or is it one way?
Have you considered going low-level and passing it over or onto the Cubby Box (blankets, pipe lagging, foam to protect item & interior) with sutable tie downs and securing? The lower the object, the less gravity can have an effect, the lower the risk? I do have to appologise, since I have a 110, and and a slim'ish 5'7" so have few problems fitting myself or objects in. It’s going both ways…
I’ve done it over the cubby before but I’m 6ft 4 and it rests right on top of the cubby where my elbow would normally go, it’s okay for maybe a hour but not for this far I used to always go in the rangie but fancy a defender road trip for a change |

Problem is the ferry, it almost doubles in price to have anything on the roof my plan is Hull - Rotterdam, drive down to Munich and i have a weeklong ship handling course in Rotterdam on the way back, the hotel car park is 2.1m in Rotterdam so I just squeeze under with my roof rack...
& The item in question is actually a RC boat, given it's value id much rather have it inside. That's the biggest of the 4 I'm taking to a race down near Munich, with 3 Pelican cases full of tools / spares / Lipo batteries all the other boats slot inside fairly nicely. ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge |

I suppose i could also brace it against the other side of the tub,
and then this gives me another place to lay the other hulls for transporting... Could put some plywood over the top too however not sure how my big sub would get on with it ![]() Click image to enlarge |

Could you remove the seat and put this in the back, slide in your RC boat and then when you need the seat re-fit? 1999 Defender TD5 110

Could I ask where you got the high level shelf?

this would actually be perfect, however i have windows in the rear now with alcantara window surrounds and not many securing points, I know there is the MSS option but its 400 quid+ and i'd probably have to cut and modify it anyway |

Could you build a frame to sit in the back to mimic the above setup? 1999 Defender TD5 110

Possibly, However i guess i'd have to go over the top of the alcantara side pieces like the MSS option.
Which would be a little more complicated / involved I think the rectangle box design probably will work, i can make it out of 30x30 or 40x40 aluminium box and incorporate some ratchet strap's to fix the boat in place. My only concern would be when cornering to the left would the frame bend and boat topple to the right... Not just on the 'Ring but general driving. Does anyone know the diameter of the bulkhead removal bar? Thinking i could incorporate a "roll cage clamp" and that would be some bracing for the left side of the rack... ![]() Click image to enlarge |
