Any aeroplane experts? strange sound...
Odd one this....

my house (well, the whole village really) is fairly under what appears to be a regular flightpath (see a lot of easyjet planes going over)

When I'm stood outside, i hear the planes coming and the engine noise (and this is going to be difficult to describe in words) but imagine the engine noise is coming through a slide whistle, there is a certain point at which the noise tone goes "down", (as in, sliding the whistle out), or you could liken it to lifting his foot off the gas, for about 5~8 seconds, then the sound tone goes back up again (pushing the whistle back in).

I'm wondering, is this just the doppler effect or is our village under the area where on a flightpath they adjust flaps/change into overdrive etc?

I'm just down the road from you - I've wondered the same as we get the same noise from the planes as they go over us as well..

I assume it's as they open/close the flaps or adjust the wing surfaces as they are coming to/from Bristol..

Raising or lowering the undercarriage makes a significant difference to the noise experienced both inside and outside the aircraft. It's hugely demanding on the hydraulic system(s) and the pumps can really scream when trying to meet the demand of all the jacks for the legs and the doors at the same time. Add to this the additional airflow noise of having the legs down and it can make a big difference...useful for helping the jet slow down to landing speeds though! Cheers,

Paul
