P2459-00 (68) Particulate Filter Regeneration Frequency Bank
Found this message after getting my G4 tool. I first thought it had to do with the short trips I did in the winter months. Playing further with the GAP tool I discovered that the distance since the last regeneration about 50 km. This aroused my suspicion, since that meant the last regeneration took place toward the end of an 8-hour Autobahn drive. This was something I did not expect, and I was puzzled by this find.
So, I decided to keep an eye on the regions.
The next regen took place after 250km. Pretty short, I thought but again there were some short trips.
Next, I did another highway drive (first with 130kmh @1750RPM later 140kmh @1900RPM)
The amount of soot kept going up despite exhaust temperature around 450°C. A regen was triggered after about 130kmh with the exhaust gas temperature during regen reaching 700C.

I plan to talk to the dealer next week, but before that, the there any way to explain this as somehow “normal”? (i.e. without a technical defect which leads the engine to produce excess soot?)

Mine will regenerate at random times, sometimes after a motorway run when l would have expected it to have burnt off the soot anyway.
l guess motorway cruising doesn't get the DPF hot enough without a regeneration cycle being triggered.
lt generally regenerates after around 100 miles. The last one occurred after 130 miles. That is with mainly city driving.

Exhaust gas temp needs to be above 600c to burn off the carbon, so depending on what type of system the defender has, the fuel vaporizer or glow plugs will operate once the soot level reaches a certain value to increase the temperature. Once the temp is above 600c the carbon level will steadily reduce to the low value and the whole cycle will start again.
I have a 2018 Land Cruiser and it uses a fuel vaporizer (5th injector) and when the DPF soot value reaches 100 (max is 300) the fifth injector alternates off and on until the value falls to 10 and then starts all over again. It is a known problem with the LC (and many other makes) that the fifth injector can block up and prevent the DPF cleaning cycle, so this should always be the first thing to check if receiving a DPF full light. DPF's only block because they are not being cleaned by a part of the upstream system. if you want to watch probably th event expert on DPF's in the UK then check out https://www.youtube.com/@ORileysAutos/featured
