Puma completely dead 😔
Hi all,

Over the past two weeks my Defender 2.2 Puma has been behaving strangely on 2-3 occasions. When I put the key in the ignition and turn to engage the starter motor I hear a click and after that: nothing. Vehicle is completely dead, no horn, no CDL, no hazard lights completely dead.

After a short wait the vehicle is up and running again. The only evidence is that the radio defaulted to FM 89.9.

Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong here?

Check the battery voltage as a starting point, then that the battery clamps are tight.

Check the under seat relays aren’t loose.

If the battery voltage checks out as sound, you can then look at the grounding point cable etc and go from there. _\Hennessey|Venom| F5/___

Tnx for your prompt reply! I removed, and refitted all the relays under te seat, whilst in this state and it had no effect. While checking the battery terminals (-) and fiddling (touching it) I saw the fuel gauge needle drop. Not sure if it was a coincident but the the vehicle was back to normal. Battery is 2 years old, and the temperature is >30 celcius.

Is there a ground lead that is infamous for being faulty?

Yes, that’s very suspicious, the ground lead could be loose there as it can compress the lead battery post, so you might want to put some shims in and the retighten.

You can often flatten the post a little with a hammer, but there is a bit of a risk that the badger case or post could be damaged, but when the clamp comes off and on it can get loose over time.
If you follow that cable black from underneath if you can check those connections are tight enough on the transmission.

If there is a ground issue it can cause all sorts of problems as it’s common over various circuits, for example you might end up with no lights if it was dark if you went over a bump…

Based on what you’ve said I’d definitely say that it’s that cable and one of its 3x connection points. _\Hennessey|Venom| F5/___

As per Above I suspect it’s the battery clamp, if battery was changed 2 years ago the clamps may not have been refitted properly and worked loose.

Ps. Do you have any other cables connected to the negative battery clamp ? If so that will be the issue as they prevent the clamp screw working properly. Note there is a work around for this if that’s the case.

If not, remove the negative clamp, expand it a little, use a socket ( bigger than the battery terminal post) fitted with an extension bar, place over the terminal clamp and “Gently “ tap the clamp down over the battery terminal post.

Then tighten and test to see if the clamp will twist, if not it should be ok.
