Water pump replace but first how to remove the fan.
Hello,
The issue is my Puma starts to leak by the water pump and I need some guidance to:
1- How to remove the fan when it's impossible to unscrew unclockwise. The Puma fan it's difficut to remove when it's 15 years old but do you have some tips?
2- There is any tutorial to take into accout, not the workshop manual itself, to see when I succeed on the step 1 what are the next steps?.
3- It's possible to remove the water pump without the extraction of the fan?

Thanks

For the fan you need something to hold the pulley while you use a 36mm spanner anti clockwise. I made my own tool out of some flat steel pieces with slots in them. That way I could put some 6 mm screws in them slots at the right distance to match the holes in the pulley. Tell me if it doesn’t make sense and I’ll take a picture of it.
The fan can be tight so prepare to use force. Cool

Remove the upper fan shroud. Leave the belt in place and tensioned. Put the 36mm wrench in place with the handle straight up. Give it a sharp smack with a big hammer in the anti-clock-wise direction with you at the front looking at the engine. Usually two or three blows is all it takes and then you can just spin it off.

When you put it back together, belt in place and tensioned, spin it back on and then just give it one good smack the other way and you're done.

No need to take the fan off, just the cover.
Then slacken aux belt via the tensioner, slip belt off.

You can use the thermostat drain hose as well for the coolant, rather than the cooler, might not be quite the lowest point but faster, the fuel cooler connections can be a pain, and when I checked those at a later date there was nothing there to be of concern.

Brake vac pump doesn’t need disconnecting from its hose, just tie it aside, then refit.

There is a WSM bleed procedure, sounds complex but it’s easier than it sounds the bleed valve is the RHS of the engine bay on a RHD. (Don’t over tighten when closing, IIRC torque is only about 2NM on the valve, just needs closing really). _\Hennessey|Venom| F5/___

First fan removal could need a bit more force ( more hits to spanner) because of some corrosion on the fan thread. Just try it. I use standard old 36mm flat spanner grinded to be a bit more flat. Much better than just welded pieces of standard (soft) steel.
When tightening the fan back, just on hit to spanner with hammer is enough. Do not overtight it.
Try to remove the fan to make yourself as much work space as possible. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

There is a viscous spanner set being sold by Paddocks Spares for the TD5 that comes with the 36mm viscous fan spanner and a pulley holder but without the bolts you mentioned. If I buy this and fit the 6mm screws to the pulley holder, will it work with the Puma? No Better Friend, No Worse Enemy

I can’t say as I don’t know the dimensions of the pulley holder.
You don’t need a special spanner on the Puma as it isn’t as tight. The holes in the pulley are 70mm apart. Here’s what I made:

It is the upper two screws that is used to hold the pulley, the other two is just to join the two pieces I had. The screws can’t be too long, then you won’t be able to fit the tool.

Searching for my first Defender...and started just as Covid hit, so talk about timing.

5 months after starting the search I found it, and here is the details

One last piece of advice, when working around the radiator, place a piece of plywood or cardboard to protect the radiator. 35 years of wrenching and the joints in my hands are worn and losing the ability to hold things lightly. In other words, I drop things. Drop a wrench on the rad fins and you might be looking for another rad!
