So a final few hours work for a few months, but at least I've reached the stage where all the bits have been cleaned up and thre isn't going to be any more really dirty work.. finally starting to put bits back together 👍

Well progress is slow and today was the last day of pottering on the bridgeport , most probably till sometime next year..😫...
Got the knee on and working nicely today.. All the other bits, ie saddle and table are clean and ready so their shouldnt be a huge ammount of time needed to have it finished , but you always find something that isnt right, and im pretty sure the table power feed motor is a knacker... Thanks..im pleased enough so far..
There have been a few bits ive had to do a bit work on to try and fabricate a repair or two..some have worked out and others ive had to resort to buying the part.. The gib strip for the knee kad an inch or so broken off and i managed to use some cast iron rod to re weld it back together.. Click image to enlarge The time consuming part was filing and dressing it down to a half decent finish.. A little worm drive shaft used to tilt the head has sheares..i fabricated a repair by brazing a new section in and recutting the woodruff key slot ..unfortunately it wasnt a strong enough solution ..so a new shaft cost about £40.. it was either that or remake the whole shaft from a solid piece of steel.. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge And i had to repair a broken casting that houses the saddle and table feed screw nuts.. Not structural but the housing that holds the split nut adjusting screw was broken.. Involved turning up a little plug blank to allow the nirs to be set in place and protect a threaded hole.. got a cast iron tack weld on the bits using an ald bit of broken piston ring...and then put some braze over the bits Also had to remake one of the small locking screws as it was an odd ball size..the difficult and time consuming bit was getting the snapped off bit drilled out of the hole without damaging the original thread , but all went ok in the end.. I dont know the history of this mill, but yes, its certainly been abused and neglected over likley the latter part of its life..broken handles, oilways blocked and the whole quill feed and auto disengage were seized..
In one of the pictures of the mill above you might just catch site of a large lathe.. Its a holbrook C13 or 16, lathe that was picked up for just the cost of transportation..dont have any documentation that ive found but it allegedly started off its life in Bletchley park workshops before moving to some learning establishment in the north east... it too however is in need of some tlc , but i suspect i dpnt have that much time left 😫🤣.. And all that and i still have a landrover id like to do some more work on when time allows👍 |

Haha... ive just looked back through the thread and see i mentioned the lathe a long time back and posted a photo then..
Ive told the young one that ill do my best with the mill and while i enjoy this sort of work and would love to get to grips with that holbrook i have my own little workshop at home with a myford and little chineese bench mill, which is usuall good enough for any work i have to do..👍🤣 |
