2013 Puma 110 getting a bit clunky. Had a waggle of the rear prop with the handbrake off. Seems to be some lateral play and not sure if the rotation is excessive.
https://youtube.com/shorts/NV65gHoLSOI?feature=shared With a little Cornish trip at the weekend I think it might be UJ time. Thoughts? As said. That UJ is knackered. Time for new. Possibly the UJ the other end too.
How handy are you with the spanners? |

Cheers, was thinking the same. I was going to look at the half-shaft splines too. I have a Propshaft tool and several grinders

Remember the bolts on the transfer case ends are captive, so careful with grinders etc else you will end up with more work..
Noting a scrub with a wire brush, followed by the application of some plusgas, a ten minutes tea break and the use of a 6 point 9/16 ring spanner and the 9/16 prop tool will ensure nuts and non captive bolts all come off ok. Worth checking front prop UJ’s before you order new rear ones... the may be fubar as well. |

Noted. Bit of a slight upwards knock on the front rear UJ. Ordered a pair for now, Plus Gas readied. Youtube readied. Plasters readied. Dorothy - 2001 Defender Special Vehicles TD5 Hardtop (Ex Scottish & Southern) Side Lockers, Side Hatches - Poorly chassis and bulkhead. (SORNd)

If you have children make sure they are on a day out, else when you are trying to remove the old UJs they will hear some extremely colourful language.

I've sent my daughter away now because we have recently moved and I can find my prop tool but not a 9/16 spanner. £&÷,'n hell. Dorothy - 2001 Defender Special Vehicles TD5 Hardtop (Ex Scottish & Southern) Side Lockers, Side Hatches - Poorly chassis and bulkhead. (SORNd)

9/16 is 14.29mm. So you can try a 14mm first then if no good see if a 15mm is too loose. Else if you have a slim adjustable that might fit. All you need the spanner for is to hold the bolts on the diff flange while you undo the nut with the prop tool.

I shopped. Excellent YT video watched on the socket and vice method. We shall see. Having just given up trying to drill out 8 steel A2 hex bolts into my ALY patriot rack I expect this to be equally 'testing'. Just be careful when you do a UJ of all the little needle bearings in the caps. You don’t want them falling out, and going missing. A tub of grease, or a few pumps of grease into the caps will help hold them in place. Once prop is off you could always take to garage or engineer if you know one. Make sure the prop either doesn’t separate on its slider, or if it makes it easier to separate to mark the two parts so I goes back together as it was made, and balanced.

Cheers the vid mentioned to load the cups with grease to stop losing the needles. It also mentioned borrowing a hairy arm to assist with alignment when pushing the cups back in. I'll have to ask the Missus to stay off the immac for a day or two.

Did you use carbide or cobalt drill bits for metal ? Standard HSS won’t drill hard steel like stainless. |

A mixture! I've seen a tip to use tile drill bits, so I may give that a go. I was able to cut through well with smaller bits but then ran out of the right gear as I had to increase diameter. Pig of a job. Dorothy - 2001 Defender Special Vehicles TD5 Hardtop (Ex Scottish & Southern) Side Lockers, Side Hatches - Poorly chassis and bulkhead. (SORNd)

Ahhh. Brings back memories. I did some work for Patriot Racks, and remember the joy of SS fastenings galling on a brand new racks, and needing to sort it.
