Things to check.
Prop UJ’s , transfer case flange, flange on diff and look in diff to see if the pin has elongated it’s hole in the carrier. You should be able to look at this by removing the fill plug. See https://www.defender2.net/forum/post909095.html If it does transpire you need a wider angle prop a double cardan one from gwyn lewis would be the ideal solution. |

First of all, you should not be loading a Puma engine at 1400 rpm. Rock crawling? Ok, sure. Going down the highway? No way. Read your manual. Best operational rpm range is between 2k and 3k. I don’t even need to look at the tach. My engine sound becomes distinctly laboured below 2k. Keep it in its happy place.
Second, they took off the front propshaft and the noise went away. That’s a pretty clear indication to me. Fit a front propshaft with a double-carden joint. If you don’t do much off-road rock crawling, stick with a Terrafirma shaft or similar. The massive Gwyn Lewis shafts are a lot of weight to be spinning at highway speeds. |

Hi
Check the simple things first. I had something similar and it ended up being the exhaust touching the removable chassis cross member, Below the gearbox, when revs were applied to the vehicle and vibrating against it. https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic95130.html Jim Last edited by jim4244 on 14th May 2025 8:24am. Are you sure it isn’t gearstick weights vibrating or turbo heat shield ? _\Hennessey|Venom| F5/___

If it is only and distinctly at 1400 rpm I would pick up on your last thought, that the prop is road speed dependent and not engine speed. It might be a fluke that the rattle went away when the front prop was removed, or it could have an effect on the problem with its weight or torque on other components, such as what Jim describes, but not be the cause of it.
Also as jb says, don't drive it with high load in that range, I know it's sometimes easier said than done since, at least for me, it feels ridiculous to rev it high enough to avoid that in uphill gear shifting for example. But I try. |

I once had a issue that the turbo heat shield carrier was cracked through at the front which caused a rpm related high pitch rattle/vibration noise.

A rattle I had was due to loose bolts on the bracket that holds the dpf to the block. They used to come loose until a bit of thread lock was applied.
