oil change on p300 defender 90
I have a 2024 def 90 l663

Low mileage but wanted to explore price for LR oil / Filter change

Synter at Sunbury just under £500 plus vat

Group 1 at Guildford £299 include vat

Harm.. Basinstoke £280 include vat

What give synter the right to rip us off because we have a great vehicle.

What are LR doing about such price rip offs.

lts not a rip off, just main dealer prices, their labour rate is £200 per hour plus VAT. Have to pay for the large showroom and numerous staff etc.

Take it to a reputable local garage, my local LR specialist charges £60 per hour.

I agree..it really feels like a rip off. It never feels like value for money.
Many Land Rover customers won't care because the car is leased or a company car so they do not bear the cost directly.

Land Rover are doing absolutely nothing about it .Their only interest is new vehicle sales and profit margins therein.

As an individual all I can do is ensure my car keeps away from dealers by using the best independent I can find, using Genuine LR parts and a VAT receipt to maintain the warranty.

First Oil service cost me £363..£150 of which was labour @£100/hr.
Oil alone was £107..( for sure they mark this up too)

My car was not washed, I didn't get offered a coffee and biscuits, I didnt have to wait an hour to drop the car off, I didn't wait an hour to pick it up. They didn't need it all day. I didn't get a courtesy car with £1000XS, I didn't have to chase to see if it was ready.....but I did get to speak with the Techie who did the service before and after.

I have bought many new JLR products over the years starting with a Discovery 2.
My current Defender is my last based on dealer experience.

I did an interim oil change on my d250 2023. Oil (opie i think) was £130, filter £30, my mechanic £60 (who looks after my old LRD and has the ramp etc). So £220 for DIY (ish) 2 years ago.

I know we took plug out and drained properly - where dealers usually suck it out leaving 400ml of old oil (with the gunk) in engine!

In line with the whole Trump import duty discussion, we are spoiled with low priced goods brought in from cheap countries so we perceive local costs as exorbitant. You can't get a Chinese plumber to come and unblock your drain for pennies. Instead you have to pay what it costs, but you have to see it relative to your income and probably it's not more expensive than what your parents had to pay in their day.

What is amazing is the low cost of consumer goods and this is where we build up a perception of whealth and excess for the last 20 years! The rest has not changed..

On a positive note, it makes DIY very attractive and the ones among us that can unblock a drain or change the oil on our cars are fortunate and wealthy (by saving)

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime! Invest in yourself, learn how to change your own oil!
