15min of Td5 action barely gets mine to operating temperature..
I would start with confirming of your engine is in any way overheating. Get a cheap infrared thermometer and start taking some readings. It could be what you hear is the exhaust where maybe a stud has come loose (broken) which is pretty common and can be a pain to correct. If so I recommend you get the exhaust manifold skimmed (milled flat), they tend to warp/bend |

The centrifugal oil filter on the TD5 sometimes makes a noise (spinning down) when switching the engine off.
Maybe that's what you hear? “A Land Rover immobilized is a moral defeat for the driver and bad publicity for the vehicle, […] it's up to you to do justice to your Land Rover!” - Land Rover Driving Technique. -- 2009 2.4 Puma Defender 90 SW 1979 Land Rover Series 3 88" |

It could be a warped exhaust manifold moving, especially if one or more stud has failed.

Very good tips! Will check "heat print" with IR thermometer and if all the manifold studs are there and not loose.
The centrifugal filter spinning-down sound can also be heard but the new sound is different. Today I listened to the running engine sound again (bonnet-up) and the strange new noise can also be heard now and then when engine is running - time to do some homework. Thank you - will reply back with findings. |
