defender puma rear knocking
had a knocking coming from rear of defender for about 6 months now, checked all suspension and shock absorbers and body mounts and all were in good condition considering the age. decided to do put new brakes on the rear axle as they were getting low and it was a bank holiday and i was bored.
came to strip the brakes down and notice slight wheel bearing play so tightened them up whilst we had it on axle stands.
what cought my attention most was there was fine metal filings in the rubber hub cap. on further inspection the half shafts on both side where the splines sit into the caps had a small amount of play in both sides. decided to replace both of these half shafts with two new ones from lof clutches.
there is no banging or knockiing at all now , quiet as a mouse, just like when we had it new. only noise now is from the wife

The one piece half shafts are great at removing rear end transmission clunks.
As for removing that annoying sound from the passenger seat, I heard a mud stuff passenger sun visor vanity mirror helps. Very Happy

One piece shafts are best here, there's no chance of any play at all.

Unfortunately I can't suggest a one piece shaft for your good lady.... well, not on a public forum anyway Laughing Laughing
