Seat belt brackets powder coat or paint?
I am going to remove all the seat belt brackets and give them a refurb, would you say they are painted (and not powder coated).

Here are some pics below:

I would say they were originally painted and without any decent corrosion protection, just plain paint straight on steel hence they rust. Power coating would be thicker.

Power coating is primarily beneficial for the supplier of the component. Its cheap and quick and gives a great finish. It completely sucks for the end user. It does not last long and when it starts rusting it creeps underneath it and comes of in big flakes. It then looks really ugly and the only way to fix it is to take it all off and start from scratch.

I avoid powder coating like the plague. Painting much better. You want something tough look for something that cures rather than dries like POR15 or 2 component paints applied with a brush even (spraying 2 pack requires extensive PPE).

"normal" paint is easy and if correctly applied last a long time especially for interior parts.

Prepping it key. Apart from rust removal and degreasing etc you also need to chamfer any sharp corners, this is where paint will be thin and rust will for first. Always apply sufficient coating thickness, 2 layers at least.

Corroless QDR primer, and if you want a gloss finish you can overcoat with Corroless RF16.
This combination is great for chassis protection, in fact the QDR glass reinforced primer is good for many, many years on its own but is Matt in finish. Perhaps over the top for your application but it goes a long way and you can use on chassis etc as well.

Wow. Its unusual to find someone echoing my own comments / thoughts so accuratly.

Powder has its place - cheap diecast alloy furniture from china, and indoor stuff, like hifi boxes, but about the only place it "maybe" makes sense on a car is alloy wheel refinishing (even then paint is better, but its more money, and powder on alloy, whilst not great, isnt as shocking)

Ive seen people on facebook proudly showing off their powdercoated (without galvanising) chasiss before... : (

Agree on PC, most annoying stuff.

I just prefer paint, spray or brush, it’ll need doing again anyway.

If it’s anything hidden then black Dinitrol does the job, but isn’t usable for parts that are handled or could be worn of course.

I prefer to stop the corrosion, over aesthetic, but if you can finish it nice then that’s even better. _\Hennessey|Venom| F5/___
