Genuine landrover kit is good as it lasts but its expensive. I swapped my brakes and i used Lof discs and Ebc Green stuff pads and i am very happy with them. If you have the swivels apart it might might be a good idea to change the wheel bearings too.

Britpart, who I always avoid, used to do very high quality complete swivel kits. I have fitted a few sets.
Luke at LOF does some nice brake stuff. I run his discs, and callipers on all four corners of mine. LOF are standard items but upgraded to stainless steel pistons, so they last. |

I've not long done a bit of work on my front axle.
It started with me needing new drive members, as there was a lot of play in the old ones. Whilst I was at it, I decided to replace the CV's. Due to time constraints, I missed out a couple of parts and I really wish I hadnt. I stupidly decided not to do the seals inside the swivel. I am not sure why not, as I literally did everything else. I have some minor pitting on the swivel ball, so I should probably have replaced them as well, but time and weather was against me. The swivel balls were empty of grease etc, so it would have been easy to do, but I didnt, so guess what the next job is towards the end of Summer ![]() I also decided to leave the brakes, as the existing pads and disks had a decent amount of life in them. Again, I am wondering if it was false economy, as disks and pads are cheap and I had everything apart anyway. I tried to use genuine parts where possible and so far have been happy with the results. Its almost a full front axle rebuild. The genuine parts are more expensive, but I think with the bearings etc, you are better getting the Timkin ones rather than the cheaper alternatives. |

The economy of a DIY-er are different since you don't pay for labour assuming you have nothing better to do. I work on my car(s) instead of watching TV which I consider wasting time.
With 'free' labour you can take things apart multiple times so something half worn can still provide many years of serivce before you go an change it (if). What would be a waste is to change components not at the end of their service life. Who knows you might end up selling the car and having an accident and then all these new parts you fitted are not going be any good to you. Obviously hard to access and relatively cheap items like seals are probably best replaced just because it will save you the hassle having to do it later. |

More interesting replies thanks. Am I right in saying the swivels balls are no longer available? I see housings for sale but not the balls. ——————————
