Door Security.
Just an idea I have been toying with....Opinions welcome!

I have just replaced the door hinges on my 90 and was surprised how easy it was to remove the fittings. I have never to date had to disturb the fittings in three years of ownership. Now fitted I was considering filling the heads on the hinges with a suitable resin or hard sealant. Whilst this would not prevent the most determined individual it would make access to an opportune thief a damn site harder. What d'you reckon? If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

If and when they do ever have to come off, patience, a toffee hammer and a couple of watchmakers screwdrivers would be my weapons of choice.
Point is if need be I would still be able to get the doors off 'eventually.' A toe rag with tools could do it in 3-4 minutes at present.

I think I may have just persuaded myself to do it anyway. Thanks Bobble. Thumbs Up If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Hi mal,
we used to get anti tamper bolts specified when we assembled toilet cubicles for secondary schools; you need a special tool to install/remove. Can't remember whether the threads would be compatible with land rover captive nuts, though?

Farmer,

We use them at work and if you have just the right size flat screwdriver the centre pin acts as a leverage point so you can still get then undone! Big Cry If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

You can get security screws which will do the job from a number of online sources. Alternatively a fairly common technique is to fill the heads with silicon sealant; this can be removed but is fiddly and takes quite a long time.

A more permanent filler is something like Loctite Metalset - you wont get this out so if you need to get the door off you will end up drilling the head off the setscrew, but, if you're doing it legitimately it doesn't really matter if it takes a long time and makes a noise.

My view is that you will never stop them if they wan't your Defender badly enough, but you might as well do everything you can to make it harder to nick yours than the one round the corner!

I do wish that someone supplied good quality deadlocks for Defender doors though! On my Disco2, when it's locked, it's locked, and you can't open the doors even from the inside. Why can't we have similar locks on Defender?

Besides "security torx" bits are now so widely available that the concept is useless for secuity!

Ball bearings and crazy glue. I use them on my commuter bike so I don't have to worry about the seat, handlebars, etc.; not permanent, but will certainly deter the average thief with a set of screwdrivers. With a little patience and some of the mrs. nail polish remover you can undo everything. Thumbs Up

I really wouldn't bother with the torx/pin type security screws myself, since all the world and his dog now has the necessary security torx bits needed to unscrew them - they are sold everywhere. I suspect that if you rely on these to stop your doors getting nicked you are giving yourself a false sense of security.

I like the ball-bearing and glue idea, since that would be undrillable.
