2012 MOT test manual
Just found the 2012 MOT test manual -

http://www.dft.gov.uk/vosa/repository/MOT%...Manual.pdf

I was just about order a new exhaust from Alive with decat etc but then found this in section 7 as a reason for failure

A catalytic converter missing where one was fitted as standard Shocked

No mention of it just being a visible test either.

Apologies if the link does not work, the site appears to have just crashed ! Lucky I saved a copy.

Link works fine Bob

May I suggest something like a Library thread/forum

No discussion but just documents/references that people find useful. Maybe a short descriptin and a link

The issue of the new MOT rules pertaining exhausts/decat which is covered on page 157 of the new regulations have been covered before. It cannot I imagine be enforced retrospectively????

http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic8411.h...p;start=15

Cut and pasted from Nosnibod's post on the subject....

I think this line "3. On vehicles that qualify for a full cat emissions 3. test, check the presence of the catalytic converter." means that IF the vehicle requires a "full cat" test THEN check for the presence of the cat.

On checking the section for a "full cat" test it ONLY refers to spark ignition (i.e. petrol) engines. This is because diesels only have a smoke test.

So on that basis I think diesel-engined vehicles can have the cat removed and pass the MOT.

Does anyone else read it the same way I do? If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!!

I read that post as well Thumbs Up

In the Vosa manual the wording is as you say 'On vehicles that qualify for a full cat emissions test, check the presence of the catalytic converter. '

Just need to find out what that statement means in respect to a Defender.

Probably easiest to go and ask an MOT test station what tests they do on a Defender.

Like you say, may be best to check with a MOT station but I think that means petrol engines as they qualify for the full test while diesels are a smoke test.

Found this on the MOT procedures and K9F is right, cat 3 test only applies to spark ignition vehicles Thumbs Up

'The catalyst test is part of the MOT test for most spark ignition petrol engined passenger cars with four or more wheels first used on and after 1 August 1992.'

Looks like money spending time has arrived, 15 hours double time today should just about cover a SS system from Alive Laughing

have a look at section 1.7 page 1 -

> Where HID or LED dipped beam headlamps are fitted, switch on the headlamps and check the operation of any headlamp levelling and cleaning devices fitted.

reason for rejection:

> A headlamp levelling or cleaning device inoperative or otherwise obviously defective

so if the vehicle does not have levelling or cleaning is that OK ?

As it says 'check the presence of the catalytic converter' can't this then just be left in the back and taken out again when you get home Whistle

Bob - the heat shield at the upper end of the downpipe near the turbo tends to obscure the missing cat. It's more obvious on Td5's.

Great idea Mark - it does not mention where it has to be or if it has to be connected to anything Rolling with laughter

WSLR - I agree, not going to worry about it and get the new system ordered up next week.
