Series 3 Axel in Series 1
Hello

Will a series 3 axel (front / rear) fit a Series one. I seem to think they are too wide?

Or what options to upgrade a Series 1 Axel to take more power?

The track is about 1" wider. They will fit (but not in an 80") but are not ideal, and they're also not any stronger. A lot of folk (myself included) have fitted a later rear axle to a post-'54 Series One in order to run fully-floating hubs with later half shafts (S1 fully-floating half shafts are unobtainable as far as I know).

Bearing in mind we used to sling Rover V8 engines in Series Ones without breaking the driveline I have to wonder what power increase you're planning.

A.SIII gearbox is not as strong as a pre-synchro SII box by the way.

I fitted spacers to my series one rear axle made from turned down flanges, so that I was then able to fit S2/3 half shafts thereby converting to fully floating axles. I am not sure if the half shafts are any stronger, but they are easier to replace than hard to obtain series one types. I have known people shorten S2/3 shafts which also works, but could lead to splines failing. Euro-Leafing to infinity and beyond.....

A German member of the Series One Club, sadly no longer with us had a number of original spec fully floating half shafts made for the Series One. I understand the Club bought all the stock, there may still be some available for sale if you contact the Club.

I run a series 11 axle on the rear of my 88” series 1 with no problems.(still have series 1 narrower axle on the front)
As said above it’s easier to replace half shafts and replace bearings.
