Out of the 3 the 3.9 is good for performance and reliability. More powerful and tunable than the 3.5. Plenty of 3.9s around to get bits off if you need them, 4.2 is rarer as iiRC was only fitted to the late Classic LSEs and not sure of reliability. I've driven a 3.5 and 3.9 and the 3.9 is much smoother.

As it happens I have a 3.9 efi on megasquirt, zf auto and Tartarini LPG kit sat on the drive, £1200 quid for the package if you are interested. All in good order, only came out of my daily drive Defender as I'm moving to the dark side. (sorry if that plug broke any forum etiquette!!)

Having had both the 3.5 and 3.9 in the same vehicle over a period of time, I liked the 3.5 more. After I had put a 3.9 cam in and a new set of lifters. It just felt better. I upgraded to the 3.9 thinking it would be better but there was no discernible difference.
Only V8 that I wouldn't touch would be from a P38. Never heard a good thing about them and when they go it gets expensive.

I have a 3.5 EFi auto in the hybrid, getting tired now, but has been bomb proof,, bog standard, has been well used Shocked but still goes well

The trayback had a 3.9 auto, with a 4.0 lt crank, rods cross bolted and top hat.s etc etc on mega squirt,, when it was going, went very well, but now fubared as it ran the crank !! so sat on the bench waiting for a rebuilt,,
In its place is a bog Disco 3.9, on the mega squirt,,which works for what i need

To answer the question Steve,, i would go later 3.9, serp belt engine,, forget P38 lumps, certainly the 4.6, due to the liners etc, California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1

A 4.0 unit from the later range is good, but make sure it has top hat liners. They are already cross bolted as well. Both the 4.6 and 4.0 units suffer from cracked blocks but as long as they have had the top-hat liners inserted, they are pretty good. The 4.0 is a more refined unit at the top end than the 4.6.

Otherwise keep it cheap and simple with the 3.5.

When i was testing on the rolling road years ago with my Bowler we got much better figures with Omex than we did with mega squirt it was was easier to map as well. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.
