Anti Stall / High Idle speed (information required)
Searched but can find thread and the owners handbook has no info.

Im not planning on doing anything but just wondered

When I select low range first the engine idle picks up from about 850 rpm to about 1100 rpm, in all other gears it idles at 850rpm.

Ive read somewhere this is to enable it to go down steep hills in low first at a controllable (not too slow) speed??

1/ Is this engine idle speed pick up a function of anti stall ie the engine is running at a slightly higher speed and hence torque when it is loaded up so it dosnt stall when said load is applied?

2/ if so does this mean that the actual anti stall function only works in low first?

I used to have a mondeo 2.0 tdci and you could pull away in 1st gear and and get all the way to 6th gear at approx 40mph without even touching the throttle, this was a function of it trying to maintain its idle speed through whatever type of govenor they have (I assume the electronics) .

3/ Is the defender in gears other than low 1st just doing what my Mondeo and all diesels do ie governing the idle speed

4/ this idle speed increase seams like a good idea why does it not do it in all low range gears?

5/ can it be altered to do it in all low range gears / all gears / be switchable so you can choose?

thanks for the help DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy

This thread, amongst many, may help to explain "Idle Jack" on the Puma Low 1st gear.
