Would you go back to an old Defender?
Question for those who previously owned the old model and changed it for a new one.

Would you ever go back to the old one? l've got someone offering me almost a brand new Defender 2.4 XS 110 SW (under 5,000 miles) in exchange for my 2022 90 Commercial.

I am not actually concerned about the financial aspect, l think in the long term it would be pretty much equal between keeping the new one and taking the old one.

Values have definitely dropped for the "Puma" Defender. There was a time when the best ones were selling, or at least being advertised at over £50,000.

lt comes down to which one l would rather spend every day driving, in my business. I have to say the "new" old Defender is tempting!! But l have to be sure l don't let my heart rule my head. Road tax is £700 and the 2.4 is an unknown quantity for me. l've only ever had TD5's.

I have never had an Olde Defender, but had several Discoverys. Some call the New Defender the Discovery 6 Laughing

Had 2 new defenders, which don't get me wrong were very nice, but so happy to be back in a td5, its noisy, slow, and uncomfortable but I still love driving it and it always puts smile on my face. The waves from fellow drivers is great too, never got this in either of the new ones. Plus I've been able to do major work on it without going near a garage. 23my p400e x dynamic hse, fuji white, towing pack, comfort and convenience, e diff, activity key, 3 zone climate, cold climate and a host of accessories. Now gone.

Haven’t owned one but driven a few. I covered it in another thread but I’d have an old one with the roof off as a summer toy. Love the old one but not as a daily, that’s why I went for Disco 3 as my first LR. 24MY 90 D250 HSE, Tasman Blue

Puma is easy to use as a daily driver IME.

6 speed box which suits daily traffic. Comfy seats front and rear. Heaters are amazing in the Puma too. 2008 2.4 110 Utility XS.

As I get older (and now that I live in France) I realize that a daily driver is just that, gets you from A to B in comfort and safely, but really should be low in cost and not too dreadful to look at.

I had several Discos and Range Rovers, all lovely cars, but in the end too much car for what I need, so I stopped with that and I would never buy a new Defender for that reason. Too expensive for what I use it for too unnecessary.

Now my other cars: 02 Defender DCPU Td5, 72 Series3 and 01 P38, these are the fun cars! I enjoy driving them very much! Timeless and at times challenging. Makes you appreciate the simpler things in life.

I call it the real Disco 5.... Quite noticeable that its the same designer (Gerry McGovern) that's designed the Disco 4 and the new Defender. Lots of people buying the L663 are coming straight from a Disco 4.

Simon at Powerful has made a good and interesting comparison


On subject I would never compare the new vs the old defender. They have really nothing in common in my opinion. What I use my old defenders for I wouldn't dare put my new one through, mainly due to it being too expensive and have plastic details that break all around. Parts being expensive and have long lead-times being another factor.
Love driving the old ones but as a daily driver for longer distances than 20 minutes I would never consider it. 2024 Defender 110 p400e HSE

Great vehicle, great opportunity, I'd LOVE it....

BUT, where could I drive it? London, Paris, Lyon, in more more and more cities it's prohibitively expensive to enter, sooner rather than later it'll be banned from all major towns and cities.

The future, I'm afraid...

Yeah the diesel thing for sure is a liability, I would definitely not sink any large amounts of money in a diesel. Petrol hybrid, E85, LPG all looking much more safe bets.

I think you'd be daft to go backwards. Nostalgia is one thing but safety and comfort trump it.

As for the Defender being a D4 replacement, it's close but it isn't. It doesn't have seven seats and split tailgate opening up to a nice square cavernous boot. The driving position is similar though.

I keep looking at D4s but my daughter has a D3 that I use if I need more versatility and load carrying capacity. Eiger Grey MY23 D250 SE with bits. Known as Noddy.

The defender does come with a 7 seat option (110) or 8 seat option (130). Boot space is not as good as the Disco 4 in general that is true but 130 5 seat config has even bigger boot space than disco 4 5-seat config I believe. 2024 Defender 110 p400e HSE

Yeah being the 2.4 TDCi Euro 4 does concern me. Currently my town doesn't have a LEZ but the next town does.

The Puma 110 Defenders seem to lose value and then stabilise. Very low mileage ones can go for £40,000.
With over 80,000 miles the value drops to low 20's but then doesn't go much below £20,000 for a nice Station Wagon.

Never got as far buying a L663, sold my TD5 90 back in 2018 (bought new in 2002 and ran twice round the clock) Then in March this year we seriously looked at a L663 90 Commercial but neither my wife or I were swayed enough to pull the trigger but the ensuing discussion convinced us this month into buying a low mileage 110 TD5 - already been to Normandy and planning a trip to the Auvergne in August. It does get used locally but perhaps only once or twice a week, we each have a daily driver. Quite probably would have gone for a Puma if a TD5 hadn’t materialised.

The "base" model L663 Commercial has disappeared from the LR configurator, the cheapest now is the 90 "S" at just over £57,000

It comes with alloys but steel wheels are available as a no cost option. lt's the third major price increase in under two years.

After Spring 2022 you could no longer order the D200, which meant an extra £3,000 for the D250. Then the price increased by £4,000 towards the end of 2022.
Now you can no longer order the base model at all. Which is a shame as it was hardly basic, particularly if you'd come from the old model!

it appears 'more money for less choice' is the prevailing JLR philosophy - big attraction of the old Defender was the option to buy a basic truck and spec it to whatever you wanted it to be, they were never particulary to cheap to buy new or s/h (I paid £17500 OTR in 2002 for a basic new 90 TD5 HT with Boost alloys and a tow bar)
