Can't lock the diff
I'm having trouble locking the diff - either I'm not doing correctly or needs fixing.

In high or low range I try to push to the left but there is no movement.

As it can be engaged while moving I gently roll it on the clutch or up to 5mph and try but still nothing.

Can I please have some guidance on either getting it in or what to check or even lubricate to get it going

Thanks!

You can get to it from underneath, there are a selection of rods/linkage on the r/h of the gearbox/tbox. Make sure they are not seized due to mud etc and ensure they are all connected, often the linkage snaps when forced. If you struggle to get to them you can remove the gearbox tunnel to get access. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

Cake, have tried transferbox lever in the middle neutral position before pushing it to the left and forward to engage low range or left and backward to engage high range Difflock? See if you have any luck this way. Rather than straight across the box.

^^^ Why?

You don't need (and don't want) to do this!

Daz110 I think you have it, I'm putting it in low and then trying to go left!

It's so simple when you know how!

I do feel quite stupid asking these questions but its all new to me.

I will try this evening and report back!

Mash - Thanks, if it doesn't work the 'proper' way then I will take a look underneath - I will take a look anyways to ensure everything is clean and as it should be now I know.

The difflock should be operable irrespective of whether you're in low box, neutral, or high box. The two mechanisms are independent.

Is it actually going into difflock but the light on the dash is not coming on?

^^^ On mine, it can take a good few yards before the diff lock light comes on. I guess the gears need to align before it fully engages and hence you sometimes need to travel (100yds should be more than plenty) to get it engaged.

Other options as discussed are seized linkage. There is a very small/fragile looking link at the bottom of the lever from the cab, where it connects to the diff lock arm from the transfer box. This is the bit that seized on mine. Needed a good amount of WD40 to free it up, then I covered it in copper grease. Has been fine for the last few years, but then it gets used a lot these days...Wink

Good luck.

cheers

When I push left its doesn't move and quite a bit of resistance is there.

I have read about others breaking so I'm not not pushing too hard but definately enough for to engage if it would.

I will try engaging from neutral and have a look underneath (despite not knowing exactly what I'm looking for) - I assume it's mounted somewhere between the prop shafts and gearbox...

Will report back this evening Smile

I just took this underneath mine but the above picture is clearer...!

Anyway, the little link I circled in red is the one that seized on mine.

So finally it's been fixed!

The area circles was the culprit was the circled area Smile

I put some WD40 on which made no difference at all. Then some some PlusGas which instantly released it.

It engages and releases no problem - the light is instant too!

Thank you all for the help and effort!

I feel I will be ready for my next bit of off roading now Smile
