Inlet manifold and intake port cleaning

Hi all, My 2008 2.4 110 Defender has covered 146k and has oil coating passenger side of engine block. I’ve removed inlet manifold to replace manifold gaskets and confirmed oil on block is coming from inlet thanks to PCV (I’ll also remove intercooler and pipes to clean out)

The intake manifold had a lot of carbon deposits in it which I’ve cleaned out, inlet ports also have a lot of carbon build up that I want to remove before refitting inlet manifold. I’m thinking of using walnut media to blast ports and valve stems but can’t find much info of people doing this on a Puma engine.

Any reason why this isn’t common? Anyone that has done it and can give any tips?

Also, what’s the easiest way to rotate engine by hand so that I can close valves on the port that I’m cleaning?

A little update, I bought the things I needed to walnut blast the inlet and valves myself. Happy with results so far but it’s very time consuming. You really can’t believe how much carbon comes out!

All down to egr valve. Mine was the same. I’ve seen inside one with egr deleted and intake is spotless.
Who would think an egr is a good idea. It’s like

in a pot and drinking it.
