Engine life expectancy
Hi All,
What sort of life can you expect from a a 90 TD5, 2.5 litre 2003 plate? The vehicle initially was used by a utility company, it has a wealth of documentation for upkeep and regular maintenance , since it left the utility co, the annual milage has been greatly reduced, its now insured as a classic car with a maximum of 5000 miles per year, currently I’ll do about 3,800 for the year.

There’s some cosmetic work to make it a tidy looking Landy, so the dilemma is how much do you spend before you consider a reconditioned, replacement engine or selling it?

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

most engines good for 500k if serviced well

My 2002 Disco2 is well over 200k miles. Provided nothing breaks, I would expect at least 250k from a TD5 and see no reason why it shouldn't be substantially more.

It is however my experience that regular use and avoiding short journeys is a major contributor to engine longevity. I would expect a vehicle which is used extensively and often to last for a significantly higher mileage than one used infrequently and only for short journeys, due to the usual problems associated with engines which never get thoroughly warmed up and and never get the moisture cooked out of the lubricant.

The TD5 is a good strong engine with very few weaknesses, there should be no particular cause for concern.

Thanks, I’ve only had the vehicle since May last year and only do regular short journeys, the maximum
Ive done so far is a 80 mile round trip.

Just be aware that regular short journeys are not good for internal combustion engines.

The only thing worth keeping an eye on is the plastic chain tensioners go but you'll get plastic bits in the oil when it they start deteriorating also oil pump bolts where a thing but i would of thought most would of gone by now but if you have the sump off its worth checking 110 Td5 Ex Utilities slowly converting into a pop top camper one day

I would think the most likely demise would be the weakest factor in most designs: the human.

All the peripheral stuff: poor running, overfuelling, smoking etc not addressed, Lack of oil changes, overheating dt not keeping the cooling system in good order, excessive idling, etc

If you look after it it will keep running for a long time.

Well currently I’ve only done small journeys as I’m now retired, any long distances we do in my wife’s car.
I intend to carry on and have it serviced each year by a landrover specialist, many of his clients are farmers and has a very good reputation. I’m unable to do service work at home as I have no suitable work space etc.

As a matter of course if you are only doing small journeys then on startup give the engine a few minutes to properly circulate the oil around the galleries and at the end of the trip do the same allowing the turbo to cool down a bit before shutdown. It is amazing how quickly the EGTs drop when at idle. I would also periodically bring the old girl up to operating temps then give her a spirited drive Thumbs Up

My 2002 110 has just clocked up 300,000 miles so you've a fair few miles left in yours.
Serviced every 6-8k.
