TD5 Starting problem
I found myself having to hang on the key this morning to start.

normally kicks into life instantly but today it started for a second then died

hung on the key to get it to fire, it then ran lumpy for a second and died.

third time held key until running smooth and drove fine completed journey but had to repeat when restarting.

thinking air in diesel system maybe injector/seals?

any thoughts would be appreciated .

Air in the system sounds about right to me too.

1) Fuel filter housing corrosion, especially around the join between the outlets and main housing.
2) Fuel Pressure regulator failure - might see diesel dripping down the block.
3) Injector seals have failed and need replacing.

Plus odd ball possibility;

4) Crank position sensor or wiring loom.

I doubt it is this one though...

If there is air in the system, you should be able to hear gurgling noises when the fuel pump primes having been left overnight. Charlie

Try running the fuel prime before a start and listen to the noise then try.

I've recently had similar and fixed by reseating the yellow relays and cleaning any oil from the red plug. Not sure which the culprit was though

Would similar symptoms occur with a heavily soiled fuel filter?
I’d have thought a well used fuel filter would begin to clog, cause the fuel pump more work to pressurise and especially starting up.

I am having a similar issue.
TD5 2004, always started perfectly, started to struggle to start , it always fired quickly but felt like it was running on 2 cylinders for about 3 or 4 seconds, once running it was perfect and would start ok all day until next morning. took to a well known 4 x 4 specialist who changed injector loom, injector seals, fuel filter and housing, air flow meter, got it back and its worse, took to another specialist who changed glow plugs and fuel filter housing and apparently cured it, picked it up yesterday but went to start it this morning and its exactly the same, very frustrating nobody seems to know, I am puzzled, could it be fuel regulator ?

Did they measured fuel pressure? It could be bad in tank fuel pump, or just some leako somewhere. Try fuel purge cycle before starting.
And from my experience, TD5 needs run for at least 30 km or 1 hour after any fuel system work, to finally purge all air from fuel system. Just short indle is not enough and car needs another purge next day. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile
