damaged transmission housing?
whilst investigating the diff lock issue (separate post)

i noticed that the transmission housing (correct? correct very much a newbie!), had an oil leak...

it seems to be coming from a hole in the casing, see photo (sorry a bit hard to see - but you can hopefully make it out)

Is this really, a hole in the casing, and something thats really damaged Big Cry or is it a normal casing 'feature', and i 'just' have a leak...

any suggestions, about what needs to be done and how serious it is...

oh, and a really newbie question... is the transmission missing a mount here? seems odd to have a bracket, and a fixing but not connected...

Hi Mark

Looking at the leak that does look like damage and a hole in the case. Any chance you can clean the oil off and post another picture ? If it is a hole I would hate to guess how that has happened. At least you do not appear to be losing much oil - I hope there is some left in the box.

Pic 2 - nothing is missing, they are all like that and there are a number of posts on the forum about it.

thanks bob,

will clean off the oil tommorow in the daylight and post up a better pick.

as you say very hard to see, black on black Smile
if you enlarge, you can just about see it....its like a shallow U shape, on the housing... almost looks like a 'chip'
(or alternative, like the shape they put on things to allow you to prise things open... if that make any sense)

(as you say, hopefully its only a small loss of oil - as the gear change seems smooth enough, i only found it as i was checking out the diff lock ... but obviously id like to get it sorted out now ive noticed it!)

The hole is there to let oil out if you have a leak...is it oil or clutch fluid ? NEVER TAKE LIFE SERIOUSLY. NOBODY GETS OUT ALIVE ANYWAY

Yes the hole is normal but you need to check whether its oil or clutch fluid.

i 'know' what normal oil is like, but clutch fluid - assume clutch fluid is not as thick, and less oily Smile

To dark and cold to go and check mine to see whats 'normal'.

As Fekete says, it could be normal. Maybe an overfill of the gearbox has caused a leak.

I will have look under mine Tuesday in daylight to see what should be there.

I would not worry to much it will still be fine to drive just keep an eye on it

Looks quite black that oil. Gear oil is vary pale. Of course it can be contaminated with clutch powder. Puma 110" SW

if thats the clutch bell housing then I would suspect the engine crank shaft oil seal . like Feteke states I wouldnt worry but keep an eye on it and the oil levels, if it is engine oil check that all the breathers are clear and the crank case is not pressurising (noticable pressurised air flow out of the filler cap when removed with engine running) DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

Land Rovers years ago used to tear the crankshaft oil seal behind the flywheel after being stood for a while and also on a really cold night but they almost always re-sealed again given time. I believe the seals up to Series III were made of leather... 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

i checked, and from my (uneducated) guess, id say it seemed like engine oil, it was dark and same consistency ... though ive never see gearbox oil.

i then cleaned it up...

and took her for a drive, 15mins, mixture of windy roads a quick blast on motorway.

got back, it was basically still clean, but there was some seepage from come the hole - but very small (small teardrop sized).

ok, so going on LR90XS2011 suggestion, popped the bonnet.
first checked oil level on dipstick, whilst engine warm and idling... this seems high, over the max marking.
(i think they may have overfilled it when they changed the oil pump, wassame when i last checked a week ago)

next, took the engine oil filler cap off, whilst idling- it didnt seem very 'pressurized' .. i.e. no hiss or anything.
though hot air was being blown out when it was off, say like a hairdryer on slow speed.

i didnt leave the cap off for that long, 15 secs i suppose. (due to it blowing splashes of oil out, and making a mess Smile)
... so not sure it would 'continue' if it left it off.

thoughts?

im thinking of taking to the garage, so they can look at the diff lock - would be good to know what to highlight to them,
if something needs to be done.

You need check the oil level with the engine off - when it is idling the oil is still being pumped around the engine. John

Technobear - as JSG says, the dipstick measures the oil level in the sump, so needs to be checked with the engine off. Allow 5-10 mins after switching off for the oil to drip down through the engine back into the sump before checking the level. The dipstick doesn't give an indication of the oil level whilst the engine is running, as oil will be splashed onto it anyway, regardless of the actual oil level. 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green
