Td5 Starts, Runs and then cuts out.
Hi, I've got a 2000MY Td5 10P here which suddenly cut out on me while driving a few weeks ago. Since then it can be started and starts fine and revs beautifully, it can even be driven under load with no apparent loss of power, however after a period of time it cuts out and may or may not restart.

If I can get it to restart it runs for less time after each subsequent restart. Once it's died it seems that if I don't try to restart it immediately but instead leave it for 24 hours it will happily restart.

I've had a local garage look at it and it was coming up with 1-5 Injector faults and Topside switch fault which the garage thinks is down to a knackered ECU.

I've also heard it could be the Crankshaft Position Sensor, and another one was copper washer failure under the injectors.

Just wondering if anyone here has any advice.

Run the priming process on pump. How does pump sound?

Any of the relays under seat getting hot? Burnt terminals?

Any vacuum when you take fuel cap off?

the fault code read points to a poorly ecu but double check wiring first or try a spare ecu and you'll soon know if the issue disappears.

crank sensor faults are normally different to what you have described

same goes for worn out injector washers and your fuel level would be rising if they were that bad.

Thanks for the help so far, the fuel pump sounds fine, can't see any damage to relays etc and none seem hot. Unfortunately I don't have a spare ECU to try; I'm going to send this one off to be repaired see how I get on then. Cheers, Luke Thumbs Up [/quote]

I’m afraid topside fault means the ECU has met its end.

Your options are either to send your current ECU away for repair or source an entire replacement. Charlie

Hi. I had ecu issue. Tamar electronics in Ivybridge. I highly recommend.

If it's TD5 ECU related and you need it testing/repairing- Dan at Storm Tuning would be my recommendation.

He's sorted a couple of problem ECUs for our customers, and usually has stock of replacements if it's either beyond repair, or the repair is not economical to do.
