jate ring

Hello everyone, I have a question about these shackles. I mounted them as tight as possible but when I have to disassemble the shackle moves on their axes and I have to use a hammer to put them back in place. Should it be tight or loose? what trick for more than just a trick?

When we would marshal at club pay and play sites of the vehicles most if not all were tighten so that they did to knock on the chassis whilst swinging.

The problem here is that when driving cross country they get pushed backwards and jammed against the chassis.

Once the vehicle is stuck and it’s the owners responsibility to attach the strop they can’t pull them back, all the while stuck in mud or up to the bumper in water.

Before they entered the site we would back off the nuts.

If you are concerned about any noise then bond some neoprene to the contact points on the chassis, that way your vehicle will be ready at a moments notice should you or someone else need a helping hand.

Finally, if it’s a heavy recovery, ie not just a simple pull, then use the Jate rings together and form a bridle to spread the load. Rely on your equipment, not someone else’s that you don’t know.

And always remember when stuck you are asking for a recovery, not a ‘tug job’, 2023 and all that. I don’t bother to keep up, it’s more fun to cause offence Whistle

As above.

I used those mini bungee cords to hold the Jate up in position for day 2 day driving. Worked well.

Bridle is a great call too, worth doing regardless of the recovery. Thumbs Up

Never a good time to discover that your recovery point won’t move.

In this case the NATO hitch needed a helping hand to open.

Funny thing was that the driver wouldn’t get out and she was not happy, but still a good sport.

Once finally out (pulled forwards) they emptied the air intake, filter housing, turbo and intercooler then removed the glow plugs to turn the engine over and force the water out.

For the life of me i cant remember if they did an oil change, but one hour later that 200TDi was going again....

Which begs the question in regards 85 ECU's.... Rolling with laughter
