Windscreen Wiper motor(?) issues
This morning they started making a noise like a little bird- from the mechanism not the blades on the screen. Needs oil on a rod somewhere I thought. Is the motor and any connecting rods easy to access and oil? Hopefully not full dash off job?

I also noticed that whilst intermittent (one down) worked fine, and so did constant (one up), what I assume to be rapid (two up) was barely moving, jittering and shaky like it was on its last legs.

Is the motor on its way out? Connection? Rust? (I do get a wet right footwell)

2013 MY Puma 2.2TDCI

Any thoughts appreciated!

What era Defender do you have? Pre or post Puma.

The chirping is quite the Defender quirk, many of them do. My wife and I affectionately refer to it as the gerbil. It is likely that the grease is a little dry.

It is much easier to deal with the wiper motor if your Defender is a pre Puma, but not beyond a DIYer if it is. But yes there is a good amount of dash disassembly required, especially if you are going to get to the bottom of the high speed issue, potentially.

Any grinding or is it just slow?

It is not uncommon for the wiper gearboxes to wear and even the wiper spring drive-rod.

Sorry, just amended post- it’s a 2.2 Puma.
The issue is only on high speed. Sometimes they work on that setting but normal speed, sometimes they stop entirely, sometimes they jitter and move v slowly. No noise associated with it.
PS the bird has disappeared!

Ok, so the fast wiper speed is a direct 12v supply to the motor, rather than going through a relay. If it is the fast speed that is duff then in the past others have only managed to solve the issue by replacing the motor itself.

The best way forward is to break out the multimeter and check that the motor is getting the required power and if everything checks out apart from the motor itself then it can only be the motor.

Bad news is that since you have a Puma you have more to do to get to the guts of the bulkhead.

I’m assuming high speed must be two clicks up, yes. Down is intermittent.
Might manage with normal speed and intermittent only- but the wider concern being the lack of high speed suggests the motor may be on the way out. That said, if so, I would expect issues with the other settings too. Wondering if it might be a bad connection/earth or something on the high speed setting?

The high speed brush on the motor commutator is half the size of the low speed and common brushes so it wears out much faster. The usual problem if high speed is on the blink is that the rush has worn out.

Somewhere there's a thread where I posted photos of the brush assembly from my motor, which did this after about 250k miles.

This is exactly the info I needed- thanks. I’ll aim to manage with the two settings that work (and are used most often by me anyway) and delay motor replacement as long as possible (assuming lack of high speed not an MOT issue).

Here's the picture. The high speed brush is the one in the 2 o'clock position, and although it looks the same width as the others you can just see where it reduced to half-width (almost all of the skinny bit has worn away).

If you can get one, replacing the the brush plate assembly will sort the problem if this is the cause.

You need to remove almost all of the dash fasteners but you can then pull the dash far enough from the bulkhead on the n/s to allow the motor to be extracted without actually removing the dash.

Ok now the intermittent wiper function has stopped, but it either works fine or it doesn’t work at all, which suggests a wiring rather than a motor fault to me, or possibly a problem with the selector lever contacts. Any thoughts? Thanks

If it works reliably with the stalk switch in the manual normal speed setting, then yes, this does suggest that it is not a motor fault. Delay unit or possibly stalk switch.

Normal speed works fine. Intermittent either works fine or not at all. High speed jitters. Might be a combination of a few things but first (easiest and cheapest) check would seem to be the selector stalk and perhaps the relay for the intermittent function. Can these be checked or is it a case of replace and see? Can someone point me to the relay location and part number? Presuming stalk selector fairly easy to replace- looks pretty cheap too. I suspect it’s the selector switch.
