Squealing Rear brakes
Hi all,

Have some issues with ridiculously noisy rear brakes. It all started when I replaced the pads with new yellow terraferma pads. When I did this I stupidly discarded the shims as the pads had a rubber backing pad. I cleaned up and cpper slipped the edges of the pads as I have done a thousand times before along with the pins. Initially I thought the squeeling would bed in but it hasn't over the last 400mi.

So new shims to be ordered, However I can only find springs and pins for pre 01 110's.

Would these fit a 13 plate?

Also has any one else had issues with terraferma pads? Have I seen my self off and just gone with Brembo as normal?

Cheers Mike

Yeah pretty common I believe.

I had the same thing happen. I had perfectly fine brakes (no noise) but then one of the rear calipers started leaking (vintage 2003) so I overhauled both sides with new seals and pistons, quick and easy as I had done the fronts a few months earlier.

On refitting the still good pads I noticed the rubbery pads were starting to come up, since I had those funny metal shims too I though well I don't need those. Soon after the squealing started, same pads and discs so these rubbery things do something.

I just bought a new set of pads (delphy I believe) and refitted WITH the stainless shims in the correct orientation. That was a few months ago and all is quiet.

So based on your observation and mine, you need the rubbery bit AND the shim. Although I thought the shims are there to avoid uneven wear..

The pins I just reused, they looked perfect. The one you link is what I have but i don't know what they look like post 2006

There is a clue in the correct name for that kind of shim - "anti-squeal shims"!

Their purpose is to lessen the pressure applied to the leading edge of the pad and this is achieved by means of the cut out in the shim. Virtually any type of pad will squeal if you omit these shims.

The partial bungy coating on the back of the pack supplements, rather than replaces, the shim, and helps reduce high-frequency vibrations.

Thanks for the replies, I have the new bits. Here's hoping it now goes away.
