Lucky 8 Stealth Winch Mount
Decided this weekend was finally time to do the winch mount project. Had all the bits I wanted on hand as I wanted to do a few things while I had the front all apart. Plan was to install the stealth winch pack with TerraFirma 12k winch. Paint silver bumper and body color grill flat black to match hood and other plastic bumper and wheel arch parts. Run a wire harness for the future mounting of a Baja Design S8 light bar which will be mounted in conjunction with bull bar install. Cut an access hole for front recovery loop and finally install the LED grill light. Everything went smooth and the Luck 8 products are very nice. Only issues I came across was the bolts included with the winch to mount the fairlead were too short for the Factor 55 aluminum fairlead so I had to source some longer ones and the wires for the LED grill were too short to run all the way to the fuse box. Neither huge deals as with a little modification all is well. I am very happy with how it turned out. Was not as bad of a project as I thought it would be.

Some pictures of the project.

Haha I know many don’t like the color. Me personally I really like it. I like the look of the paint scheme on the x which has been the motivation for the change. That and I don’t like the silver bumpers. Will paint the back one when I add tow hooks and the rear ladder. No more paint changes after that.

Nice job!

I’ve just bitten the bullet and ordered a kit to be shipped over here to the UK for my V8 Mr. Green

The Lucky8 video seemed really helpful - think I’ll tackle it myself (probably with some help!) Cheers, David

I think you will be surprised at how easy it is. Just take your time in the areas where the video says be careful and all will be fine. Only issue post installation I have had is my bumper geometry is slightly different. You don’t notice looking at it but it now rubs with my slightly larger tires where it did not before. I believe it because of how snug the bottom of the bumper opening presses against the winch tray causing flex that was not there before. I plan to trim it down to relieve some of that and see if my issue goes away. If not then I will trim the wheel well side bottom of the bumper to clear.

Problem solved. In the video it says to leave the bottom of the bumper opening tight on the winch tray. I cut it based on the video and instruction specification but this caused too much flex in the bumper resulting in a minor clearance change in the wheel well. Trimming that area and then pulling out on the bottom of the bumper when tightening the four attachment screws on the bottom returned the clearance to normal. Running stock tires I doubt this would be an issue but if not be aware some trimming may and adjustment may be needed to make sure clearances are good.

Job done!

As has been said above, it’s not too hard really just a series of steps to take carefully and one by one.

A good cutting tool (I had one of those vibrating ‘multi tools’) and a well lit, dry space to work are key I’d say, and just take your time.

Really happy with how it came out, and at about £1800 all in including shipping from the US it felt much more justifiable than the genuine Land Rover kit at £5k or so.

NB. You’ll also need a 450/500A megafuse for the auxiliary terminal under the bonnet

Yep unfortunately the D44 one is a no-go with the petrol engines that have the AC fan in front of the radiator Cheers, David
