2007 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 USW Java Black
Clutch advice please!
Hi all,
Just after some advice please!
Had my 2007 puma 110 for just over 6 months now, love it! Recently had work done on transfer box. When collected my 110 the garage commented that I should be looking to replace clutch etc, as once a spring goes it causes more damage!
I haven't noticed any abnormal knocking etc, I know puma clutches gear boxes are not the best in the world!!!
What I'm asking you all...
Is it possible to tell this with out dismantling the clutch ?
Or are the garage just after work?
The garage is different to where I bought 110!
Thanks for any advice

Did they take the Tbox out of the rig or just changed some seals with it in place? Ask them why do they recommend to replace the clutch. Puma 110" SW

Had new transfer box fitted. Was all paid for, by dealer I bought rig from in uk. The garage who done the work is a main dealer in Poland. Didn't mind using main dealer as I wasn't paying but now, paying is down to me!
They just said there head mechanic advised after he took for test drive!
Just want some other feedback as wonder whose interests they have?

If you switch off the engine with the box in neutral and the clutch engaged, do you get a rattling noise from the transmission area? If so, your clutch needs replacing sooner rather than later. If it is virtually silent, then it is OK.

My 07 had a new clutch fitted earlier this year after my preferred (and very trustworthy) main dealer branded it the worst he had ever heard, and the tranformation was remarkable. Expensive, but cheaper than having the driven plate disintegrate, and definitely worth doing if only for the inprovement in driving pleasure.

Hi " Blackwolf"
I always start and stop engine with foot depressed on clutch! I've just tried stopping it in neutral with clutch pedal NOT depressed and hear couple of "clanks" from transmission, where as if you stop with clutch pedal down , no " clanks"! My 2007 rig has done 50000km ( about 30000 miles) , not sure if been replaced before!

Me too, I always start and stop engine with foot on clutch, and I hadn't realised what a racket it made. You are describing exactly what I heard, and I strongly recommend that you get the driven plate changed as soon as you reasonably can. I don't know what extra damage is caused when the springs finally drop out of the driven plate (which I am told eventually they will), but I will wager that it will be expensive.

I would suggest that at the same time the slave cylinder is changed since doing this also is a gearbox-out job, and not doing so is a false economy, also the flow restrictor in the clutch hydraulic line.

When I picked up my truck after having this done, I was very pleasantly surprised at how great the improvement was; a much bigger improvement than Ihad expected.

My 07 had had the clutch changed at the first service, but unfotunately that meant that it received a new old-style driven plate! It had done approx 70k miles when I had the new clutch fitted, but the old ones can fail well before this.

I have a significant amount of backlash in the t-box which is a nuisance, but I wasn't prepared to fork out the £3k or so it would have cost for the dealer to fit a replacement one at the same time as the clutch. Also, since I have had a very bad experience with LR reconditioned parts (Disco 2 steering box) in the past I would not consider having an LR recon t-box fitted (and I believe that any box supplied through the parts chain outside warranty will be reconditioned rather than new). When a good independent gearbox remanufacturer (such as Ian Ashcroft) starts supplying top quality rebuilds at sensible prices, then I will change it. I can live with backlash, but wasn't prepared to take the risk of the driven plate breaking up.

I had similar with ours.

It appears early clutches are made of parmesan cheese and don't last long. Newer ones appear a lot stronger.

Well that's what I'm hoping anyway!! Defender 110XS SW gone... now VW California 180 4 Motion.

My 2008 rig has done 25000km. I don't feel particular clutch problems, anyway today I put my telephone on the ground just under the transfer unit to record any possible strange noise when the engine was turned off.

Here you can listen it in .mp3 format:
http://k003.kiwi6.com/hotlink/euk5a0qhhu/engine_off.mp3

Noise can be a little harsh than inside the vehicle because the recorder is very close to the transfer unit.

Do you heard something strange ?

Sounds a lot different to when you are sitting inside! The last noise is the EGR doing what it is supposed to do.I did have a clutch changed due to rattles on turn off but it sounded nothing like this. You would hear it in the cab rattling if it needed changing.Does not sound like a clutch spring rattle to me. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

I hear something loud before the EGR cleaning cycle. Might be the input shaft rattling IMHO Puma 110" SW

Thanks all for trying to analyze my engine noise!
I agree that noise recorded from under the engine is loud and different from inside the vehicle.
