New nocking sound after diff oil change
Hi everyone,

I have a 2001 110 td5 with a salisbury rear diff.
Went for a drive all was good, parked on the main road that is level, to change the oil in the diff.

I have a pump like this one below.

Undone the fill / level bung plastic oil was pouring out.

Undone the drain plug( metal with magnet, no metal on it ) and waited until it was all empty.
Showed the hose of the pump in the oil bottle and the other side in the fill hole.
Filled it up until it was coming out.

Got in to drive it and i have this knocking noise now.

The oil is 80W90, and it took about 2L.

Anyone can shed some idea on what to look at? Could have i dislodged something with the hose? Its a slightly plastic hose, not a full rubber one.

Could the filler plug be wound in too far?
or something come off the end of the hose?

As excossack. If you tighten to much you can even drop it inside. It only needs nipping up.
You may use a bit of ptfe tape if you think it may leak. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Does strike me as being odd, having no flange to stop bung being wound in too far 1999 Defender TD5 110

now reading online i think the drain plug is proper tight, as i found it somewhat tight and i have done it up tighter lol Got da 110 TD5 2001 Smile

It's pipe thread which is tapered so it jams in. You do not want to overtighten it. No point.

There are more sophisticated plug designs, but this works perfectly fine and is simple with no gaskets required

That oil looks like it has water contamination, very milky looking. Check your axle breather. It ends up under the offside rear wheel arch. It should have a looped over end to prevent water from being sucked into the axle, but the pipe can perish close to the chassis and sit there in the worst of the wheel arch spray and dirt.

The fact the even when jacked up the oil was pouring out suggests either the vehicle was pointing downhill when filled last time or the oil has become contaminated since then... Hence the above.

OK, your knocking noise sounds tinny with a constant frequent impact like sound. Like a playing card in the spokes of a bike wheel, but more rigid sounding.

Something is rubbing against the crown wheel perhaps. Have you lost something off the pump into the axle?

There are two ways to find out: the first is an endoscope through the bung hole and the second is to take the cover off the diff. Only sure ways to know. Benefit of the second is you can get eyes on the gears, check for chipped teeth, etc. but also the opportunity to flush and clean out the axle if it is contaminated.

If it were me I would take the Salisbury plate off and take a look.

thanks for that.

The landy was not lifted for oil change, and it was on level ground.
A good 200 - 300ml has poured out while only the filler was removed.
The contamination part makes sense as it was more than 2L in it, it was a lot of fluid.
The hose from the pump was a fresh hose i cut nothing on the end to fall in.

The knocking noise does speed up as i go faster.

I will remove the cover and get a gasket and flush it.

Best plan IMHO. Check that breather hose whilst you are under there.

As a minimum, drain the oil to remove as much metal shavings as possible,
Better still is to take off the diff pan, and clean manually.
Try to get a magnetic drain plug, if you do not already have one, so it picks up whatever you have missed.
Then fingers crossed. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
