Not me (old Defender owner). Was at a funeral service last night and a woman who had a New Defender approached me. She could not get her bonnet open to top up her washer bottle. She said it was in to the dealer with the fault which they said they fixed but she never checked it when she got it back. Any ideas. As it was dark I did not want to start messing with it. I did suggest someone pulling the bonnet opening lever and a second party work at the front of the bonnet this morning when it was bright. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Not being a New Defender owner I am not familiar with the positioning of the various components under the bonnet..... 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

You could try removing the fake air intake grille and yanking the bonnet release cable from there !!

This happened to mine a while back. Was about to book it into the dealer, when I tried it again after a short journey and it worked fine.
Felt like an electrical gremlin more than anything mechanical, and hasn't happened since. |

It is simply a bowden cable. Nothing electrical about it.
I have no idea where I'd try to get at the bowden cable to pull it and open the bonnet, tho. Since my front end is in pieces I'll take a look later. I couldn't find anything for the new Defender on a quick google either. 
Did you try having someone press down on the front of the bonnet to release the tension on the latches while a second person pulls the lever? That often works...

It was just a perfect stranger who asked me if I could help. She was over on a visit from Scotland and was heading back yesterday. A long trip with an empty washer bottle! 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Yes, I had this. Pulling lever, or propping it up, while pressing down on the front of the bonnet worked until it went in for its first service. They said they had adjusted it but said cable had stretched so ordered a new one. That was on back order but has now been done and so far works fine. All under warranty of course.

Stretched cables are a common fault.

Bit surprised it happened within a few months of delivery and after only a few openings of the bonnet though. And also that the adjusters couldn't take up the stretch which could be expected initially, but much less if anything after that.
