Castrol changes Puma oil recommendation
I have just noticed on Castrol's website that they are now advising Edge 0-30 (ie the normal 0-30 not the turbo diesel one) for the Puma where previously it was always Magnatec. I wonder if this is due to the 2.2 and its EU5 spec. And with Halfords currently giving away A1 Magnatec maybe its going to be discontinued anyway ?

Do any of the oil boffins out there know why ?

They started doing this sometime ago. The Magnatec meets the specs for the 2.4 but it seems that the Castrol Edge not only meets the specs required but has other "benefits". And so it should as it is a more expensive item.No doubt someone technical will come on and give us a layman's explanation as to the extra benefits of using Castrol Edge.Given that I will be doing an oil/filter change at 6,000 miles I will stick to the Magnatec. One of my service receipts says that the dealer used Castrol Edge for the oil change. The financial receipt would indicate otherwise. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

There are two types. You need the A5/B5 probably. As for the new 2.2l an Acea C rated is probably needed. Maybe I`m wrong. Puma 110" SW

The Castrol Magnatec A1 5W-30 is A5,B5 so it is O.K. for the Puma 2.4.Do not know what the 2.2 needs. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

The EDGE 5w-30 products are for the newer DPF engines. Magnatec 5w-30 for the older engines. UK certainly, but why the 0w-30 on the OP I don't know.

NB. If your dealer is using the official Castrol product, then they will be using GTX (equal to Magnatec) or (IIRC) Castrol Magnatec Powerflow which is equal to the retail 'EDGE' range. I'm told they differ slightly from the retail Castrol you buy from Halfords etc, but probably not enough to make a difference. I only know this because I've been looking into using Castrol now that everything has been made so much more complicated by the vehicle manufacturers and the oil manufacturers and so I've been talking about official bulk purchase. Land Rover are refusing to honour warranty based on the 'incorrect oil' which is bull because our local South West dealership network uses Mobil now, not Castrol. Confused? Me to.. Confused

As for the cheaper offers on Castrol at the moment, the stock is being reduced, so it won't last long. Castrol are due to start marketing a new product (or name?) when the sponsorship of the Olympics starts.
