Tyre Strength Question?
So I have made a few decisions recently after much umming and arrring.

I am about to press the button on a set of Mach 5 wheels for my pickup but need some advice regarding tyres please.

I am looking for 285's (because I can Wink ) and need a tyre that is strong as my pickup gets some heavy loads in the back. I don't do a hell of a lot of off roading but am off road often cutting, collecting and transporting logs.

I also live in a remoteish area that never gets gritted so generally it's only me that can get about this past two years when it snows, having something that works in snow would be good.

I am thinking either:

BFG MT
Duratracs
or Discoverer STT's

My 90 has an Ifor top and it gets filled to the gunnels with logs, wet or seasoned and when it's full I dread to think of how much it weighs. In peoples experience what tyres would be suitable for dealing with heavy loads as I have heard BFG although good have weak side walls.

Any suggestions welcomed. Nick

The load rating for the BFG's far exceed what you'd get in your rear tub Cool

Personally I'd go with BFG MT KM2s or Kumho KL71s. Either will be more than adequate load-wise.

I have used both types extensively and never had any issues with the sidewalls of BFGs; I have frequently run on both at max GVW with no problems, although clearly it is important to ensure tyre pressures are correct (typically I run my 285's approx 10psi higher than the figures LR quote for stock size - any less results in uneven tyre wear).

BFGs are generally more expensive but may last up to twice the mileage of KL71s. I managed 100,000 miles on a set of 265/75 x 16 BFG KM1 MTs on my Disco 2 before the tyres needed replacing.

My (re-plated)90 kerbs in at 2,900 all day every day and tows and the BFG AT's still last 90thou miles and i have never got stuck on any buiding site, could not get across a very slippery muddy field once but never have been stuck, as far as i am concerned they are the best tyres on the market. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

Thanks for your responses, PM for Killer90

@ Rob - No it's something I've picked up from google searches. Thinking about it though most of the sites are American so it might be said in relation to rock crawling? Nick

Ah ok. Fair enough. Im out working in Australia at the moment and the vast majority of their Utes have BFG ATs. Nearly all the Utes that work on the mine sites have them. Gives a bit of confidence i think.

I have them on my 90. I think they are great, but as said above they are expensive, and sometimes hard to get hold of. Current:D4 HSE

STTs. stiff sidewalls, very few if any punctures. BFG have changed all their compounds, not sure why so many seem to be still worshipping at the BFG altar without knowing how the new compounds perform.
