Nugget Stuff Air Intake Fitted
Defender 110 2.2 TDCi with Alive remap and BIG intercooler.

I fitted the Nugget Stuff sealed air intake a while ago. Not because I plan on doing any extreme wading but for possible performance improvements due to less restriction in the air intake.

With the factory set up I did get water in the air box when driving in heavy rain with lots of spray. Therefore the factory set up does not separate the water 100%. I've yet to compare the amount of water with the new set up; it's not rained yet.

I had already removed the "turbine" thingy at the entrance to the air box and gain an improvement. The new air intake has a similar effect only more so. The engine picks up better and is willing to rev a bit more, I find I'm holding gears longer. Strangely I also think its ability to lug a low RPM is also improved. It's till no GTI but it's a definite improvement.

With the window down you do hear some lovely intake noise and turbo whistles but there's no more noise with the window up.

Isn't the turbine thing in the original air box there to separate water out of the intake air and let it drain out of the air box ?
Only you mention water in the air box and say that you removed the turbine thing.

Just the £250 pipe thingy. I kept the standard air box with a K&N filter.

There's a couple of devices in the original set up. First up there's a centrifuge with a drain then there's the turbine thingy at the entrance to the standard air box. As I mentioned when I had the standard set up water still made its way into the air box. There's a drain hole in the bottom of the box to let it escape. BTW when I say water gets in, it only dampened the bottom 1/5 of the box. Water is heavier than air so it falls to the bottom while the air goes up and through the filter.

I've done a few more miles today and it's definitely smoother with more acceleration. I hope it also increases the MPG at tad too.

Thanks good to know. I have a K&N or something similar from when I had my Alive tune done.

Many more miles including a big camping trip now done.

The derestricted air intake makes a BIG difference. Definitely pulls better, smoother low down and picks up better. The best bit is that fuel economy has improved, getting 30MPG now! The downside is that I have to keep a keen eye on the speedo, it's too easy to do a bit faster than what's allowed.

i have this kit on my 130, no snorkel just the kit for same reasons. after 2k miles my reckoning is other than piece of mind, and more noise, no other benefits on pickup or economy. Cheers

What engine 2.4 or 2.2?
Is the engine remapped?
High flow air filter?
Have you remove the "turbine thingy" from the air box inlet?
Is there a high flow wing vent?

All these add up.

Interesting. It could be a 2.2 thing. I don't know enough about the differences between the two engines to comment on why.
