Axle Strengthening/Trussing any experience?
I'm looking at the option of strengthening the axle casings for the 130, I'll be running a standard front and rear 4 pin from a TDCI. Rover casings don't have the best reputation and fully laden 130 could put an awful lot of strain on one....

I've seen the following available from Xcess4x4 and Terrafirma, but the Xcess ones are £160 when you take into account postage, which is more than I can bring myself to spend.

I'm pretty handy with a welder, and could plasma cut some out of some box of the right size, but before I go ahead I wondered if anyone had any experience? 1985 127 V8 Build Thread

Wolf axles were upgraded in a similar style due to the axle casings cracking during trials, the 110 and 130 both received the upgraded axle and I’ve never seen one snap, the r-wmik plus has a different axle again but I think it came in over £2500 when I costed one at work (wasn’t for a broken one I was just curious). 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

I did try and track down a pair of wolf axles like those below but in the end decided the more cost effective route would be to strengthen normal ones...

I'm tempted to go with either top or top and bottom reinforcement as opposed to the bottom reinforcement as employed by the wolf type axles. 1985 127 V8 Build Thread

I looked at sleeving them internally but the cost far outstrips the benefit IMO. I think the xcess 4x4 kit might be the way to go... 1985 127 V8 Build Thread

weld on diff guard would make it stronger too as they have a 3/4" steel brace around the diff face.

Xcess ones are Domex. Much lighter and much stronger than steel, also a far better fit. Being tested on all years of LRs and feedback reported, design adjusted.

TF have just bent some steel that may or may not fit. Instagram @defender_ventures

The d44 one is just a diff guard rather than strengthening. Couple of lads running the Ashcroft force 9s sleeved their axles for strength. Tube being very strong and all that, find the tight size id and od tube, drift it in the weld end faces to axle case. Cant see that as more expensive than bracing the axle. I believe acerni do a kit, is it not part of there cool over setup too? Cheers

Hmm, not sure which way to go then....

I agree the TF ones aren't anything special and if i were to go down that route then I'd just buy some box and chop it to suit with the plasma.

The Xcess ones are lovely but £160 is more than I think I can justify...

Sleeving is looking like an increasingly good option, I need to speak to Dave Ashcroft today anyway so I'll ask him if he can shed any light on size of tube etc. 1985 127 V8 Build Thread

Laughing

Hello All,

I am Nige from Xcess 4x4 and was pointed to this thread by Mate Mr Mo Murphy. Bow down

If a few of you decide you wnat to go for the kits, post up here and I'll see what sort of discounts I can do, always up for a deal ..

JUST BESAR IN MIND the kits will fit all 90s and defenders, but will NOT fit 110 / 127 / 130 rears without you making mods etc. We looked doing 110 back axles etc, but with all things CNC its the set up costs vs volume, and as such we decided 90s and defenders only and never did the 110 rear axles.

Customers HAVE bought the kits and made them fit, but its only fair to warn that we spendt a lot of time making them decent fit and time to do 110s just isn't there as I am on another project for the last few months which we will be launching soon ! ..

If you are interested then post up and when i see how many I will see what I can do, and yes we can ship abroad LOL

Nige Thumbs Up
