i think it was Packard who made the engine for the P51 mustang (they made sewing machines before the war!), that engine has literary been shot to bits with 20mm jap cannon and still got the pilots home. The septics do make some good engines no denying it!

It was one of the major winning factors the armor of the P51 where as the japs had very little. A real flaw when 6 x .50 cal are chewing on you.

Incidentally the septics wouldn't have had the P51 without the brits as it was us who put out the requirement for it to tender!

the last derivative did indeed have a merlin licensed engine.
